2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer Reviews Summary

Stylish, affordable, and practical, the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer appeals to a broad cross-section of consumers from the young to the young at heart. Chevy introduced this subcompact crossover SUV last year, and for 2022 a heated steering wheel and a handful of new paint colors are available. A dealer-installed trailering package is also new for 2022, but with nothing but three-cylinder engines on tap, towing cannot be a good idea.

2022 Ford Explorer Reviews Summary

Two years ago, Ford redesigned its popular Explorer midsize three-row SUV. It moved to a rear-drive platform, added an optional hybrid powertrain, and offered everything from a value-rich base model to a luxurious Platinum trim level. Since then, Ford has added ST-Line, Timberline, and King Ranch trim levels while simultaneously honing the Explorer’s packaging to appeal to the broadest cross-section of Americans possible.

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

2022 Ford Explorer

8/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was a small SUV that managed to impress with its appealing design. Chevrolet nailed the proportions, character lines, and details, making it attractive even in its base L trim. The option for a contrasting black or white-painted roof added to its charm. Despite its compact size, the Trailblazer offered a range of trims from L to RS, with prices starting at $20,195 and going up to $26,695, excluding a $1,195 destination charge. The RS trim, which we tested, came with all-wheel drive (AWD) and a starting price of $28,195, but options pushed the total to $33,000. However, the interior was filled with hard plastics, which detracted from its value at that price point.

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered a more extensive lineup with eight models, ranging from $33,745 to $54,495, plus a $1,495 destination charge. The Explorer expanded its lineup with the rugged Timberline and luxurious King Ranch trims, and introduced the sporty ST-Line. Our test vehicle, the King Ranch, featured four-wheel drive (4WD), premium technology, and a twin-panel sunroof, bringing the MSRP to $59,880. While the King Ranch had unique emblems and shiny wheels, it didn't stand out much from other trims. The Explorer's design, based on a rear-drive platform, gave it a sporty and athletic appearance, with a long hood and a floating roof effect. Inside, the King Ranch boasted exclusive Del Rio leather seating and a mix of quality materials, though some elements reminded us of the base trim.

Performance

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

6/10

2022 Ford Explorer

9/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was powered by turbocharged three-cylinder engines. The base 1.2-liter engine produced 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, but the larger 1.3-liter engine was preferred, offering 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. The Trailblazer came with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for front-wheel drive (FWD) models, while AWD versions featured a nine-speed automatic transmission. The AWD setup also included a more sophisticated rear suspension for improved handling. The RS trim rode on 18-inch aluminum wheels and provided a nimble and fun driving experience, though it was loud on highways and had a bouncy ride. The Trailblazer averaged 26.1 mpg in combined driving, slightly below the EPA rating of 28 mpg.

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered three powertrains. The base, XLT, ST-Line, Limited, and Timberline trims came with a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Explorer's hybrid option, available for the Limited and Platinum trims, combined a 3.3-liter V6 engine with an electric motor for 318 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque, achieving up to 27 mpg. The top trims, including the King Ranch, featured a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine with 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, offering a towing capacity of 5,600 lbs. The King Ranch averaged 20.6 mpg during testing. The Explorer's ride was robust, handling off-road terrain well, and it felt athletic on daily drives. The sport-tuned Explorer ST was the choice for driving enthusiasts.

Form and function

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

2022 Ford Explorer

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer, despite its small size, offered impressive functionality. It could accommodate four people comfortably, with a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat in the RS trim. The rear seat, though roomy, was flat and uncomfortable for long rides. The Trailblazer's cargo space was versatile, with 25.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 54.4 cubic feet with them folded down. The front passenger seat also folded flat, allowing the SUV to carry items up to 8.5 feet long.

The 2022 Ford Explorer provided ample comfort for families of four, with the option to carry five with a second-row bench seat. The King Ranch trim featured triple-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and massaging front seats. The third-row seat was cramped and best suited for children. The Explorer's cabin lacked practical storage solutions, but it did have a hands-free power liftgate and 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. With both rear rows folded, it offered 87.8 cubic feet of cargo volume.

Technology

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer came with a comprehensive infotainment system featuring a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen. Standard features included Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Our test vehicle had the larger screen with Alexa Built-in, Spotify, SiriusXM, and a 7-speaker Bose audio system. The system was user-friendly, with physical controls for easy navigation. Remote engine starting was available from the LT trim, and a keyless entry keypad system was offered.

The 2022 Ford Explorer featured two versions of the Sync 3 infotainment system, with either an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. Our King Ranch test vehicle had the full suite of Sync 3 technology, including FordPass Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system. However, the voice recognition system was outdated, struggling with basic commands. The King Ranch also included a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and Active Park Assist 2.0.

Safety

2022 Ford Explorer

10/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer prioritized safety with 10 airbags and a rear-seat reminder system. Chevy Safety Assist was standard, offering forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and more. Optional features included blind-spot warning and adaptive cruise control. The Trailblazer earned top crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS.

The 2022 Ford Explorer received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. It came with Ford Co-Pilot360, which included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and more. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ added adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist. The Explorer also featured post-collision braking and MyKey programmable functions. The safety systems operated smoothly, though the steering wheel sensitivity could be improved.
