2020 Lexus RX Reviews Summary

The Lexus RX was the original luxury lifestyle crossover in the United States The 2020 Lexus RX comes in two-row and three-row varieties. The three-row version is given the Lexus RX-L moniker. They both deliver on the key points that make the RX a solid choice for buyers shopping in the midsize luxury SUV segment.

2020 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Depending on who you ask, the modern SUV will continue to dominate the new-car market until it's the only type of vehicle on the road (except pickup trucks). That prediction makes sense; modern SUVs drive like cars, can get through most snowstorms, and have the cargo space to tackle most of what daily life throws at them. They are great all-around vehicles, but in trying to master everything, many have lost the specialization that made them noteworthy in the first place. In particular, many luxury SUVs have lost their off-road credibility.

There are exceptions to this trend, including upmarket trims of the Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as most of the Land Rover lineup. Another brand that bucks the trend is Lexus. Sure, the Lexus RX pretty much created the modern luxury crossover, but it gets sold right alongside the immensely capable Lexus LX and this vehicle: the 2020 Lexus GX.

You’ll be forgiven if you forgot the GX was still available. Lexus has updated the GX for 2020 with fresh styling to make it a bit more memorable. Still, beneath that new exterior is one of the oldest vehicles offered today, and as you’ll learn, that has its advantages.

2020 Lexus RX

8/10

2020 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2020 Lexus RX received a significant refresh, both inside and out, making it stand out in a competitive market. The exterior updates included standard 18-inch wheels, slimmer headlights, and L-shaped taillights, with optional triple-beam LED headlights. The grille was redesigned to align with other Lexus models, and new paint colors, Moonbeam Beige Metallic and Nori Green Pearl, were introduced. The rear of the RX was revamped with a new shape, dual exhaust, rear diffuser, and updated reflectors, along with an available hands-free tailgate. Inside, the RX maintained its well-appointed cabin with various interior color and material options, including wood and satin-brushed aluminum trim. The F Sport appearance package added unique features like a special steering wheel, shift knob, aluminum pedals, and 20-inch wheels, enhancing the SUV's sporty appeal. Despite its stylish design, the center stack's dated look was a drawback, as it lagged behind the industry's move toward more modern and streamlined interiors.

The 2020 Lexus GX, though aging, received some design tweaks, including the adoption of the hourglass grille seen across the Lexus lineup. Despite its decade-old platform, shared with the Toyota 4Runner, the GX remained a capable and rugged SUV. The interior, however, showed its age with a large, chunky center console and a recessed infotainment screen reminiscent of early 2010s Lexus styling. The GX was available in three trims: 460, 460 Premium, and 460 Luxury, each offering a range of features. The base 460 trim was well-equipped with 10-way power front seats, leather upholstery, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Premium trim added features like rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated and ventilated front seats, and navigation. The Luxury trim included premium leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and a self-leveling air suspension. Despite its dated interior, the GX's rugged capability and off-road prowess made it a unique offering in the luxury SUV segment.

Performance

2020 Lexus RX

9/10

2020 Lexus GX

9/10

The 2020 Lexus RX 350 was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivering 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. The three-row RX 350L models had slightly reduced power at 290 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. The RX 450h hybrid version combined the V6 with an electric motor, achieving 308 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. The RX 450hL, an elongated version, produced 259 horsepower from the gasoline engine and 165 horsepower from an electric motor. The RX hybrid models featured an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT) and offered all-wheel drive with an additional motor on the rear axle. The RX's performance was not sporty, with a 0-60 mph time of 7.9 seconds, but it provided a smooth and comfortable driving experience. Fuel economy was a strong suit for the hybrid models, with the RX 450h achieving 30 mpg combined. The RX F Sport models offered adaptive variable suspension and 20-inch wheels for enhanced agility.

The 2020 Lexus GX 460 was equipped with a 4.6-liter V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard 4-wheel drive. While the V8's power figures might not impress compared to modern engines, it provided a satisfying driving experience with its smooth power delivery. The GX's steering was light yet direct, and the self-leveling air suspension offered a smooth ride. The GX excelled in off-road capability, with a 4WD system and various chassis controls, making it suitable for challenging terrains. It could tow up to 6,500 pounds and had a tight turning radius of 19 feet. However, its fuel economy was less impressive, with an average of 16.3 mpg observed during testing.

Form and function

2020 Lexus RX

8/10

2020 Lexus GX

8/10

The 2020 Lexus RX's interior was functional but not as stylish as its German competitors. The two-row RX model comfortably accommodated four adults, while the three-row RX-L's third row was best for small children. The cabin was spacious in its two-row configuration, with comfortable front seats and decent visibility. However, the cargo area was smaller than rivals, with a high load floor compromising space. The RX 350L and 450hL also had less cargo space compared to competitors like the Lincoln Aviator.

The 2020 Lexus GX offered second-row captain's chairs and power-folding third-row seats in its Premium and Luxury trims. The captain's chairs provided easy access to the third row, but getting into the third row was challenging for adults. With all rear seats folded, the GX offered 64.7 cubic feet of cargo space, less than some competitors. The GX featured a side-opening rear hatch and a separately opening rear window/hatch, providing convenient access to the cargo area.

Technology

The 2020 Lexus RX's infotainment system was often criticized, but improvements were made for the 2020 model. The standard 8.0-inch display and available 12.3-inch touchscreen were moved closer to the driver. Despite these changes, the system remained difficult to navigate. However, the RX came standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and other integrations, providing alternative ways to access features. The RX also had six USB ports and an available 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system.

The 2020 Lexus GX's infotainment system showed its age, lacking Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, it featured a true touchscreen with large buttons for audio, navigation, and climate controls, offering simplicity compared to modern systems. This layout was easier to use, despite missing some modern connectivity features.

The 2020 Lexus RX came with Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, including adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and blind-spot monitoring. Additional features like daytime bicyclist detection and lane-tracing assist were standard. The RX received good safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, though not as high as newer models.

The 2020 Lexus GX included Lexus Safety System+ with forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. It also had blind-spot monitoring and an available surround-view camera. The GX offered excellent visibility with large windows and mirrors, enhancing safety.
