2020 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Depending on who you ask, the modern SUV will continue to dominate the new-car market until it's the only type of vehicle on the road (except pickup trucks). That prediction makes sense; modern SUVs drive like cars, can get through most snowstorms, and have the cargo space to tackle most of what daily life throws at them. They are great all-around vehicles, but in trying to master everything, many have lost the specialization that made them noteworthy in the first place. In particular, many luxury SUVs have lost their off-road credibility.

There are exceptions to this trend, including upmarket trims of the Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as most of the Land Rover lineup. Another brand that bucks the trend is Lexus. Sure, the Lexus RX pretty much created the modern luxury crossover, but it gets sold right alongside the immensely capable Lexus LX and this vehicle: the 2020 Lexus GX.

You’ll be forgiven if you forgot the GX was still available. Lexus has updated the GX for 2020 with fresh styling to make it a bit more memorable. Still, beneath that new exterior is one of the oldest vehicles offered today, and as you’ll learn, that has its advantages.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a competitive compact SUV for buyers looking to satisfy the needs of the typical family. For the 2021 model year, Mazda has enhanced the model’s tech and discontinued the unpopular diesel engine in the United States. There’s also a new Carbon Edition for buyers to choose from. Despite the changes, the highlights and quibbles about the SUV are mostly unchanged from the 2020 model year.

2020 Lexus GX

7/10

2021 Mazda CX-5

9/10

The 2020 Lexus GX, despite its age, continued to carry the rugged charm of its predecessors. Introduced in 2002 and redesigned in 2010, the GX received some design tweaks over the years, including the hourglass grille that became a signature of the Lexus lineup. This grille, while controversial on some models, suited the GX well. The vehicle's decade-old design was evident, but its shared platform with the Toyota 4Runner ensured it remained a capable and rugged SUV. The interior, with its large buttons and recessed infotainment screen, harkened back to early 2010s Lexus styling, which worked well for a vehicle designed for rugged use.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5, on the other hand, embraced a sleek and smooth design, standing out in a market filled with aggressively styled SUVs. The base model came with features like automatic LED headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels, while higher trims added more luxurious touches such as leatherette seats and dual-zone climate control. The CX-5's design was consistent across its trims, with the Carbon Edition and Signature models offering unique styling elements like red leather seats and genuine wood trim. The interior materials and fit and finish were impressive, rivaling more premium brands.

The 2020 Lexus GX 460 was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard 4-wheel drive. While these figures might not impress compared to modern engines, the V8 provided a robust and unmistakable power delivery. The GX's light steering, though initially feeling over-boosted, proved to be direct and responsive on the road. The self-leveling air suspension offered a smooth ride, and the GX's off-road capabilities were exceptional, thanks to its 4WD system and various chassis controls. The GX could tow up to 6,500 pounds and had a tight turning radius of 19 feet. However, its fuel economy was a downside, with an average of 16.3 mpg observed during testing.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 offered two engine options: a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, and a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. The base engine provided adequate performance, while the turbocharged engine delivered a more spirited drive. The CX-5's fuel economy varied depending on the drivetrain and engine, with the most efficient model achieving 28 mpg combined. The turbocharged engine, while powerful, had slightly lower fuel economy. The CX-5's sporty driving dynamics were a highlight, though its stiff suspension could be a drawback for some.

Form and function

2020 Lexus GX

2021 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2020 Lexus GX offered second-row captain's chairs on the Premium and Luxury trims, with the latter also featuring power-folding third-row seats. The captain's chairs provided easier access to the third row, though getting into the third row was still a challenge for adults. The GX's cargo space was limited, with 64.7 cubic feet available with all rear seats folded. The side-opening rear hatch was unique but not particularly advantageous, though the separately opening rear window was a useful feature.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5's interior was designed for comfort and functionality, with good headroom in both rows but limited legroom for rear passengers. The CX-5 had two full LATCH connections in the rear outboard seats and a tether connector in the middle seat. The climate controls were straightforward and easy to use, though the large shifter and infotainment controls took up considerable space. The CX-5's cargo space was below average for the segment, with 30.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 59.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Technology

The 2020 Lexus GX's infotainment system showed its age, with a true touchscreen interface flanked by large buttons for audio, navigation, and climate controls. While it lacked Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the simplicity of the system was a plus for some drivers.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 came standard with a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen. While the screen size was impressive, the operating system was less so, with a cluttered interface and difficult-to-use controls. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, providing a workaround for the system's shortcomings.

Safety

2020 Lexus GX

8/10

2021 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2020 Lexus GX came standard with the Lexus Safety System+, which included forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and a surround-view camera were also available. The GX's great visibility, thanks to its high seating position and large windows, added to its safety.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 boasted a long list of standard safety features, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning. Additional features like a head-up display and surround-view camera system were available. The CX-5 earned high safety ratings, including a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star rating from the NHTSA.
