2020 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Depending on who you ask, the modern SUV will continue to dominate the new-car market until it's the only type of vehicle on the road (except pickup trucks). That prediction makes sense; modern SUVs drive like cars, can get through most snowstorms, and have the cargo space to tackle most of what daily life throws at them. They are great all-around vehicles, but in trying to master everything, many have lost the specialization that made them noteworthy in the first place. In particular, many luxury SUVs have lost their off-road credibility.

There are exceptions to this trend, including upmarket trims of the Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as most of the Land Rover lineup. Another brand that bucks the trend is Lexus. Sure, the Lexus RX pretty much created the modern luxury crossover, but it gets sold right alongside the immensely capable Lexus LX and this vehicle: the 2020 Lexus GX.

You’ll be forgiven if you forgot the GX was still available. Lexus has updated the GX for 2020 with fresh styling to make it a bit more memorable. Still, beneath that new exterior is one of the oldest vehicles offered today, and as you’ll learn, that has its advantages.

2021 Ford Bronco Reviews Summary

Following a 30-year run and a 25-year layoff, the Ford Bronco bucks back into the 2021 corral. With a sharp focus on off-road capability and a soft focus on comfort, the new Bronco offers two available powertrains, a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, standard four-wheel drive, clever engineering, and bold styling.

2020 Lexus GX

7/10

2021 Ford Bronco

9/10

The 2020 Lexus GX, despite some new design tweaks, retained much of its decade-old styling. The updated GX featured the hourglass grille design, which was more palatable on this model compared to others in the Lexus lineup. The vehicle's rugged capability, shared with the Toyota 4Runner, allowed it to remain relevant despite its age. The interior, however, showed its age with a large, chunky center console and big buttons, reminiscent of early 2010s Lexus cabin styling. The GX was available in three trims: 460, 460 Premium, and 460 Luxury, each offering a range of features from leather upholstery to advanced navigation systems.

In contrast, the 2021 Ford Bronco embraced a "Retrofuturism" design, drawing inspiration from the original 1966 model while incorporating modern technology and materials. The Bronco's exterior featured a single-piece grille with bold B-R-O-N-C-O lettering, removable off-road sights, and a choice of 32-inch or 35-inch tires. The interior combined retro styling with modern technology, including a color touchscreen and digitized cluster. The Bronco was available in two-door and four-door configurations, with a variety of paint colors and removable top options. The design emphasized modularity, with removable doors and fenders, and practical features like trail sights and integrated grab handles.

The 2020 Lexus GX 460 was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard 4-wheel drive. Despite its age, the V8 engine provided a satisfying swell of power, and the GX's light yet responsive steering made it easy to handle. The self-leveling air suspension offered a smooth ride, and the GX excelled in off-road conditions, thanks to its various 4WD modes and Downhill Assist Control. The GX could tow up to 6,500 pounds and had a tight turning radius of 19 feet. However, its fuel economy was less impressive, with an average of 16.3 mpg.

The 2021 Ford Bronco offered two engine options: a standard 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four with 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, and an optional 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with 310 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The 2.3-liter engine came with a seven-speed manual transmission, while the 2.7-liter engine was paired with a 10-speed automatic. The Bronco's performance varied between on-road and off-road conditions. On pavement, the Bronco's 35-inch tires from the Sasquatch package provided a noisy ride, but the 2.7-liter engine delivered smooth power. Off-road, the Bronco excelled, handling various terrains with ease and offering a balanced, sure-footed drive. The G.O.A.T. system provided multiple drive modes for different terrains, enhancing the Bronco's off-road capability.

Form and function

The 2020 Lexus GX offered second-row captain's chairs on the Premium and Luxury trims, with power-folding third-row seats standard on the Luxury trim. The captain's chairs provided easy access to the third row, though getting into the third row was challenging for adults. The GX had 64.7 cubic feet of cargo space with all rear seats folded, which was less than some competitors. The side-opening rear hatch was unique but not particularly advantageous, though the separately opening rear window/hatch was a useful feature.

The 2021 Ford Bronco emphasized modularity and practicality. The removable doors came with dedicated storage bags and easy-to-use electrical connections. The Bronco's chassis had standard protection, with additional skid plates available. The fenders and bumpers were also removable for easy repair. The trail sights on the hood served dual purposes, including managing roof-mounted cargo. Inside, the Bronco featured practical switches for suspension settings and auxiliary equipment, making it easy to operate off-road features without distraction.

Technology

The 2020 Lexus GX's infotainment system showed its age, with a true touchscreen flanked by large buttons for audio, navigation, and climate controls. While it lacked Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the simplicity of the system was a plus for some drivers.

The 2021 Ford Bronco used the latest SYNC 4 infotainment interface with enhanced voice recognition. The standard 8-inch touchscreen could be upgraded to a 12-inch screen with the High Package. The Lux Package added a 10-speaker B&O sound system, voice-activated navigation, and a wireless charging pad. The G.O.A.T. system provided multiple drive modes for different terrains, enhancing the Bronco's off-road capability.

Safety

The 2020 Lexus GX came standard with the Lexus Safety System+, including forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and a surround-view camera were also available. The GX's high driving position and large windows provided excellent visibility.

The 2021 Ford Bronco's safety features varied by trim level. The Base model had basic safety features, while higher trims could add the Mid Package, including Ford Co-Pilot 360 with pre-collision assist, blind-spot information, lane-keeping system, and more. The High Package added a 360-degree camera and forward-sensing system. The Bronco's side curtain airbags were designed to deploy appropriately in off-road situations, considering lean angle and roll speed.
