Look and feel

2019 Honda CR-V

9/10

2020 Lexus RX

8/10

In 2019, the Honda CR-V presented itself as a versatile option with four trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring, each available with either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Pricing ranged from $24,350 to $34,150, excluding destination charges. The CR-V LX featured standard 17-inch aluminum wheels, which added an upscale touch even to the base model. Higher trims boasted body-color trim, larger 18-inch wheels, and rear privacy glass.

Visually, the CR-V generally impressed except for its front-end styling, which some compared to a Robot Horseshoe Crab. Nevertheless, its rear design looked quite sophisticated. Inside, the CR-V emanated quality with materials and construction that exemplified value for money. Even though hard plastic materials were used, they neither looked nor felt cheap. The interior was stylishly arranged, with a notable two-tone tan-over-black treatment.

Conversely, the 2020 Lexus RX underwent a refresh that bolstered its already stylish appearance. The exterior updates included new standard 18-inch wheels, slimmer headlights, L-shaped taillights, and an available option for triple-beam LED headlights. The grille was redesigned to align more closely with other Lexus models, and two new color options—Moonbeam Beige Metallic and Nori Green Pearl—were introduced. Changes to the rear, including a new dual exhaust, rear diffuser, and updated reflectors, contributed to a fresher look. Additionally, a hands-free tailgate became available.

Inside, the RX maintained a high level of refinement. Various colors and materials, including wood and satin-brushed aluminum, could be selected. The F Sport package was a step further, with unique steering and shift knobs, aluminum pedals, sportier bumpers, and larger 20-inch wheels. Leather-wrapped surfaces conveyed a premium feel. While the center stack seemed somewhat dated, overall, the Lexus RX’s interior was user-friendly and built to endure family use.

Performance

2019 Honda CR-V

7/10

2020 Lexus RX

9/10

Performance-wise, the 2019 Honda CR-V came in two engine choices. The base LX was equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 184 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 180 pound-feet of torque at 3,900 rpm, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that could send power to either the front or all four wheels.

Upgrading to the EX, EX-L, or Touring trims switched the engine to a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder that delivered 190 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 179 pound-feet of torque between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm. Though horsepower figures were close, the turbocharged engine was more responsive and offered better acceleration, alongside improved fuel economy. However, it faced potential issues in cold weather or during short trips, which could cause engine misfires. Additionally, some CR-V owners reported battery problems.

Driving dynamics for the CR-V were commendable. The MacPherson strut front and multi-link double wishbone rear suspension, combined with 235/60 tires on 18-inch wheels, provided a well-composed ride. The electric steering system offered a great feel, being light at lower speeds and gaining heft as speed increased. Braking performance was robust, being smooth and reliable even under mountain driving conditions.

In comparison, the 2020 Lexus RX 350 was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine making 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The RX 350L variant offered slightly lower power figures. For those seeking a hybrid, the RX 450h combined a V6 engine with an electric motor to produce 308 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque, achieving 30 mpg combined for the AWD hybrid model.

Though the RX wasn't the quickest SUV, with 0-60 mph times around 7.9 seconds, it rarely left drivers wanting more power. The hybrid models excelled in fuel economy. Handling received a boost with the RX F Sport models' adaptive variable suspension and 20-inch wheels, aimed at enhancing agility. Drive modes such as Normal, Eco, and Sport offered flexibility, with even more sport-focused settings available on the F Sport.

Form and function

2019 Honda CR-V

2020 Lexus RX

In terms of interior space, the 2019 Honda CR-V could comfortably accommodate a family. The front passenger seat lacked height adjustability, which some might find uncomfortable; however, the driver’s seat offered extensive adjustability with a 12-way power option except in the LX trim. Backseat passengers enjoyed ample room, with rear air vents and USB ports contributing to comfort during long trips.

Storage was a highlight for the CR-V, offering 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expandable to 75.8 cubic feet when folded down. This volume surpassed that of many compact crossovers and was nearly comparable to the larger Honda Passport.

The 2020 Lexus RX, while offering a luxurious cabin, faced criticisms for its cargo space. The two-row model provided comfortable seating for four adults, but the third row in the RX-L was best suited for children or pets due to its limited space. The RX's high load floor further compromised cargo capacity. The comparison revealed that the RX had less cargo space than its competitors, especially noticeable in the RX-L variants.

Technology

Starting with the EX trim, the 2019 Honda CR-V featured a plethora of infotainment and driver-assistance technologies. The infotainment system included a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and HondaLink connected services. Navigation was standard on higher trims, and the top-tier Touring model included a premium sound system. However, the in-car tech wasn't without its flaws. The small screen size and occasional unresponsiveness detracted from the user experience.

Efforts to modernize the 2020 Lexus RX infotainment system made some progress, notably by positioning the screen closer to the driver and offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Nevertheless, the system remained challenging to navigate. Lexus did offer a comprehensive suite of connectivity options, including Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Improvements in the touchpad system and the addition of more USB ports helped, but the system still lagged behind competitors.

Safety

2020 Lexus RX

For safety, the 2019 Honda CR-V incorporated Honda Sensing on all but the LX trim, featuring adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and forward-collision warning, among other technologies. These systems performed adequately, though they lacked the refinement seen in other manufacturers’ offerings. The CR-V earned a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS, despite not achieving a Top Safety Pick Plus due to headlight performance.

Every 2020 Lexus RX came equipped with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, which included adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and several new additions such as daytime bicyclist detection and low-light pedestrian detection. Lexus Enform Safety Connect provided additional support, though reliability issues were noted during testing. The RX received favorable safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, consistent with its well-established safety credentials.
