Do Rear Brakes Really Need To Be Cleaned And Adjusted On A Toyota Corolla?

I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla with 45K miles on it. My Toyota Dealer says I should have the rear brakes cleaned and adjusted at a cost of $72. I've read that this is an unnecessary maintenance task.
