CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 1,044 currently listed for sale and an average price of $36,154, 37.0% of 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
83.3% of 2022 Highlander Hybrid models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid stands out most for efficiency and value. It makes up for a lack of excitement with a surplus of efficiency, and its best selling points are its excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing. It is also described as comfortable and an excellent value for money, which helps broaden its appeal for buyers who want a practical three-row SUV without paying for flash.
At the same time, the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is not especially attractive, sporty, or luxurious. Its performance is fairly pedestrian, its styling is uninspired, and its interior materials feel cheap. That combination makes it less compelling for shoppers seeking refinement or driving excitement, but it remains appealing for those who prioritize fuel savings and a sensible price.

I had a 2012 Highlander Hybrid XLE….loved it!! Toyota and Lexus Hybrid models until a return to the re-design of this year’s beauty. I got the Highlander Hybrid Platinum. Great ride, fantastic gas mileage. Top quality interior, nothing cheap about the quality.

Comfortable, good responsive feel on the road, feature rich, great gas mileage. Moderate storage capacity for its size in comparison to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Not a good choice for towing above 2500 lbs.

It stands out most for efficiency and value, with excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing as its best selling points. It is also described as comfortable and a practical three-row SUV, which makes it a sensible fit if you want family utility without paying for flash.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, styling is uninspired, and the interior materials feel cheap. That means you should expect a pragmatic hybrid SUV rather than something sporty or especially luxurious.
Good and great deals account for 35.2% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Highlander Hybrid is framed as a practical family vehicle with strong efficiency and value, and its expert assessment supports that by emphasizing comfort and sensible ownership costs. Its hybrid setup is also presented as a major advantage because it delivers meaningful fuel savings without making the vehicle feel dramatically different to drive.
The performance notes point to a hybrid powertrain that uses electric motors to get moving quickly at low speeds, with the gasoline engine taking over smoothly afterward. The cost-effectiveness notes also highlight that the hybrid premium can be recouped relatively quickly through fuel savings, which helps reduce long-term ownership strain.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained well enough to preserve its efficiency and everyday comfort.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any listing you like, even if it appears clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the hybrid system, braking feel, cabin condition, and any signs of heavy family use. Because this model leans on practicality and efficiency, condition matters a lot more than cosmetic appeal alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE trim is the entry point, while the XLE is described as the sweet spot for budget-minded shoppers. If you want genuine leather, you need to move up to the Limited or Platinum trims, and the Platinum also adds more upscale equipment.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup with 243 horsepower, a CVT, and standard FWD. AWD is available through an added rear electric motor, and the hybrid system is tuned more for efficiency and smoothness than excitement.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. A surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are reserved for the top Platinum trim.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, while a 12.3-inch screen is available only on the top two trims. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration are standard on all trims, and wireless charging starts with XLE and above.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD hybrid is estimated at 36 mpg combined, and the hybrid’s fuel savings are a major part of its appeal.
Which 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core hybrid efficiency story at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the most affordable way into the lineup and do not need upscale extras.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim. It is called out as the sweet spot for budget shoppers, and it adds enough comfort and convenience equipment to make the step up worthwhile.
- Limited: This is the right choice if you want a more premium feel. It adds genuine leather and other niceties that help justify the higher price.
- Platinum: This is the top trim for shoppers who want the most equipment. It is the only trim that gets the surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights, along with the larger available touchscreen and other upscale touches.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are limited to the top Platinum trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,055 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.56% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $34,842, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $35,951 sits slightly below last year's $37,668.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been kept.
Because this model is valued for efficiency and practicality, clean examples with strong equipment and a good history should remain easier to move than neglected ones. The current pricing trend also shows that buyers are still willing to pay for the right example, even if the market has softened.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid safe?
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. The IIHS named the standard Highlander a Top Safety Pick+.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. A surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are only offered in the top Platinum trim.
The main caveat is that some of the driver-assistance systems can feel a little overactive or delayed in real-world use. Adaptive cruise control can wait too long to slow, lane-keep assist can create too much steering resistance, and lane-departure warning can trigger false alarms.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.56% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It pairs excellent fuel economy with accessible pricing and a practical three-row layout.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $33,519, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $35,951 average.
- It adds a sporty XSE trim and upgraded safety features.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $39,033, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $35,951 average.
- It emphasizes a quiet cabin and standard advanced safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, efficiency, and family usefulness, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense only if you find a cleaner or better-equipped example worth the extra cost.
