CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 1,053 currently listed for sale and an average price of $35,476, 35.4% of 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
82.6% of 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid stands out most for efficiency and value rather than flash. It makes up for a lack of excitement with a surplus of efficiency, and its best selling points are excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing. It is also described as comfortable and an excellent value for money, which helps broaden its appeal for buyers who want a practical three-row SUV without paying for more upscale alternatives.
That practicality comes with clear tradeoffs. The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is not particularly attractive, sporty, or luxurious, and its performance is fairly pedestrian. Its styling is uninspired, and the interior materials feel cheap. For shoppers who prioritize efficiency and affordability over excitement or refinement, though, those compromises may be easy to accept.

I had a 2012 Highlander Hybrid XLE….loved it!! Toyota and Lexus Hybrid models until a return to the re-design of this year’s beauty. I got the Highlander Hybrid Platinum. Great ride, fantastic gas mileage. Top quality interior, nothing cheap about the quality.

Comfortable, good responsive feel on the road, feature rich, great gas mileage. Moderate storage capacity for its size in comparison to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Not a good choice for towing above 2500 lbs.

How much does the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $35,451 |
| Year-Round Low | $34,842 |
| Year-Round High | $37,037 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $37,040 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.29% |
Prices have softened 4.29% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,041 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating and 6/10 expert rating point to a model that delivers more value than excitement. The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid stands out for efficiency and accessible pricing, and it is also described as comfortable and practical for buyers who want a three-row SUV without moving up to a more upscale alternative.
The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 8/10.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, styling is uninspired, and the interior materials feel cheap. If you want a family-focused hybrid that prioritizes savings and everyday usability over flash, this setup makes sense.
Good and great deals account for 36.8% of listings, which suggests you can still find worthwhile opportunities.
Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is framed as a practical, efficiency-first three-row SUV, and its hybrid setup is presented as a sensible choice for buyers who value low running costs and everyday usefulness.
Its performance is described as adequate rather than exciting, but the ride is soft and the cabin stays relatively quiet on the highway. The cost-effectiveness case is especially strong, with the hybrid setup positioned as a smart way to save money over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a well-used example may show the wear that comes with family duty, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper report. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on cabin wear, trim condition, and how well the hybrid system and driver-assistance features operate in real-world use. Pay close attention to whether the vehicle feels well maintained, especially if it has seen heavy family use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE trim is the entry point, while the XLE is the sweet spot for budget-minded shoppers. Higher trims add more upscale touches, and the Limited and Platinum trims are the ones to target if you want genuine leather.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup with 243 horsepower, a CVT, and standard FWD, with AWD available through an added rear electric motor. It is tuned for efficiency and calm commuting rather than quick acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. A surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are reserved for the top Platinum trim.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, while a 12.3-inch screen is available only on the top two trims. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa are standard, and wireless charging starts on XLE trims and above.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD hybrid is estimated at 36 mpg combined, and the hybrid’s efficiency advantage is a major part of its appeal.
Which 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core hybrid efficiency story at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the Highlander Hybrid’s main strengths without paying for extras.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim because it hits the sweet spot for shoppers on a budget while adding useful equipment over the LE. If you want the most balanced mix of price and features, this is the one to target.
- Limited: This trim is the move if you want a more upscale feel, including genuine leather and several other niceties. It suits you if comfort and cabin upgrades matter more than keeping the price down.
- Platinum: This is the top trim, and it is the one to choose if you want the most complete feature set, including the available surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are only offered on the top Platinum trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,041 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.29% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $34,842, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $35,451 sits slightly below last year's $37,040.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Because this model is positioned around efficiency and value, clean examples should continue to attract practical shoppers. Well-kept listings are likely to hold demand better than worn ones, especially if they present as accident-free and mechanically sound.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid safe?
The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star overall ratings from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for frontal collision and rollover protection.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. A surround-view camera system and adaptive headlights are only offered on the top Platinum trim.
One caveat is that the driver-assistance systems can feel a little overactive in practice, with adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist both needing some fine-tuning.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It emphasizes efficiency and value over flash, with a practical three-row layout and strong fuel economy.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $33,475, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $35,451 average.
- It adds a sporty XSE trim and upgraded safety features.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $39,372, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $35,451 average.
- It brings a quiet cabin, standard advanced safety features, and strong safety ratings.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, efficiency, and available inventory, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2021 is the better value path. If you want to spend more for a newer example, the 2023 is worth a look, but it asks for a higher budget.
