Is the 2016 Toyota Tundra a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Toyota Tundra earns a 4.29/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 8/10.

Owners commonly praise its power, reliability, smooth ride, interior comfort, and resale value. That lines up with the truck’s straightforward workhorse appeal in the overview, especially if you want capability and traditional truck character more than the latest efficiency or refinement gains.

Only 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective rather than flooded with bargains.

Is the 2016 Toyota Tundra reliable?

Owners rate it 4.29/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to reliability, and it also highlights the truck as dependable and trouble-free for many drivers. The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability by describing the Tundra as capable and stout, with a traditional truck setup that should feel familiar over the long haul.

Toyota also notes a standard V8 and a 3-piece bumper design that can be less costly to replace than some competitors’ setups, which helps with ownership practicality. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that repair costs and age-related issues can add up if the truck has been poorly maintained.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tundra?

At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing or heavy work. Focus on body condition, suspension wear, and signs of past repairs, since those can matter more than cosmetic mileage alone. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example with the best maintenance record is usually worth the premium.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tundra’s trim progression adds meaningful equipment, with the SR5 bringing fog lights, HD and satellite radio, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, while the Limited adds automatic headlights, dual-zone climate controls, a power-sliding rear window, and navigation. The Platinum trim adds the most upscale feel, along with a spacious back seat and additional convenience features.
• Powertrain: The truck uses a 381-hp 5.7-liter V8 with 401 lb-ft of torque and a 6-speed automatic, and it can tow up to 10,500 pounds. The tradeoff is fuel economy, which is listed at 13 mpg city/17 highway and 15 mpg combined.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes traction and stability control, trailer brake and sway control, and eight airbags with full-length side airbags. Available features include a rear camera, front and rear parking sonar, and a blind-spot monitor with cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The upgraded Entune system includes real-time traffic and weather, and it uses a 7-inch screen. Standard tech includes heated mirrors and wipers, USB ports, and an auxiliary jack, while higher trims add features such as navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The Tundra is rated at 13 mpg city/17 highway and 15 mpg combined, which is a major ownership consideration if you drive a lot.

Which 2016 Toyota Tundra trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Tundra is offered in 3 trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the value-oriented choice if you want the core Tundra experience with useful upgrades like fog lights, HD and satellite radio, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. It gives you the essentials without pushing the price too far up.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more complete daily-driver setup, including automatic headlights, dual-zone climate control, a power-sliding rear window, and navigation.
• Platinum: Choose this if you want the most upscale version of the Tundra, with the most comfort and convenience content, including the spacious back seat and the richer feature set described in the test-drive notes.

Safety features such as the rear camera, parking sonar, and blind-spot monitor with cross-traffic alert are available rather than standard, so check each listing carefully.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tundra?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully but not so much that every listing is a bargain.

• Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,267 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.07% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,765, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Tundra's resale value?

The current average of $25,351 sits slightly below last year's $26,428.

That softer pricing can help you buy more truck for the money today, but it also suggests the market has adjusted downward from a year ago. If you plan to sell later, the current trend means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history. Clean, well-kept trucks should still hold up better than average because buyers continue to value the Tundra’s reputation and utility.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.29/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Tundra safe?

The 2016 Toyota Tundra earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, and the CrewMax specifically rated only three-star in frontal impacts and rollovers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded its highest rating of Good in all tested segments.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes traction and stability control, trailer brake and sway control, and eight airbags with full-length side airbags. Available driver-assistance features include a rear camera, front and rear parking sonar, and a blind-spot monitor with cross-traffic alert. The CrewMax’s lower frontal and rollover results are the main caveat to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tundra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.07% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.29/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 update adds an upgraded Entune system, a larger gas tank, and an integrated brake controller on upper trims.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $23,964, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $25,351 average.
• It stands out for its strong personality, especially in TRD Pro trim.

The bottom line: choose the 2016 if you want the better-equipped version with updated convenience features and a still-reasonable market price. If you’re focused mainly on spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path, especially if you find a clean example with the right trim and maintenance history.
