Are you sure it's 3rd gear and not 4th or overdrive, that's where you would feel a shutter the most. But if you feel it in 3rd as well, it could be the torque convertor locking up, which is normal, but maybe something is a miss. How is the fluid level and when was the last time the fluid was changed? I would do a trans fluid/filter change and see if it helps, then diagnose from there.

most likely the torque converter.

Are you positive its the Trans at all??? I know that Fords with Coil over plug design have problems with coil pack failure. This seems to happen when under load 2 - 3 gear and sometimes when down hifting from OD to 3rd. The coil is sometimes intermittant and will work after about what feels like a 10 - 30second shudder of the engine. It feels like a trans but its not. Check you computer for codes. If you have anything in the 300 - 308 its more then likely a coil going bad.

torque converter. same problem, Ford dealer said it was the clutches were drying out. drained the fluid and added a special converter fluid. and havent had a bit of problem since. PS don't trust a transmission shop unless you know them REAL well
