starter to flywheel grinding noise just replaced starter on 1999 Mazda b2500

When cranking loud noise between starter drive and flywheel. Replaced starter twice once with rebuilt and once with new, each time the starter stopped working. The last time I moved the crankshaft turned the key and it started. Are there different starters for this model or different starter with different tail housing.  Has 2.5 liter Ford engine.
