pull a spark plug...how does it look?

It's hard to answer whats the problem right off with very little info. Your best bet would be to do the basic troubleshoot first. Spark to plugs? Gas to cylinders? When you say it wants to start that to me sounds like the engine is cranking the cylinders fire up but the car won't idle. You would be good to get a Bently repair manual for your MKll also, it will walk you through a troubleshoot. Go to: http://forums.vwvortex.com/forumdisplay.php?2-Golf-II-amp-Jetta-II
