I have a 1988 BMW 528E. How do I secure the wire that attaches to the number 6 plug wire?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

There is a wire that has a small rubber doughnut on one end that slips on the number 6 (plug closest to firewall) plug wire.  The other end of the wire attaches to some electronic device on the other side of the engine.  I've changed the plug wires, but I can't figure out how to get the doughnut on the wire around the plug wire without taking apart the spark plug connector.  Any suggestions?  Also, can you tell me what the purpose of that wire attached to number 6 plug wire is?

Sounds like a ground wire to me. Post a photo, as I can't find anything referring to it online.
