on my 2001 dodge dakota slt i was having problems shifting into gears now it wont shift out of park,knowing this is electronically controlled should i have the sensor checked or what?

Sounds like the shifter/brake pedal interlock solenoid has quit. That's the device that won't allow you to shift out of park without stepping on the brake pedal first. It's usually mounted under the dash on top of the steering column. HTH. -Jim
