wont shift to park or start in neutral

car runs great ..but went to start it just clicked ...radio and air came on ..seen
that it wasnt in park  but the shifter was all the way up...i tried to start it in
neutral; ..no go..so i  turned the wheel ,moved the shifter up and down ,,it
went into park and started right up..i had trouble getting it ito park when i went
to turn the engine off

on the engine bay, look at the shift cable at the driver's side of the car. see if the cable is ok and no binding.
