Flywheel and starter won't mesh

Starter flywheel want mesh new starter new
bolts and has been shimmed use to beable
to bump ignition would catch and start new
start just spins or grind

Compare the old starter with the new one. They should be identical. Including the number of teeth on the drive gear and the length of the nose. You may have a defective unit in that it was boxed wrong. Also inspect the flywheel ring gear for missing or damaged teeth. HTH. -Jim
