99 Camry starting issues

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 99 toyota Camry started giving me
issues this winter.  It began by
intermittently not starting in the
morning. Once it started it was fine for
the day. I replaced the battery because
there was corrosion but the problem
remained. Then upon starting one day
the starter remained engaged and
trying to start while the car was already
running. I shut it off and removed the
key but it continued trying to start. The
only way to get it to stop was to unplug
the battery cable. I read some sites that
said to tap the starter to get it to stop.
That worked and I brought it to a
mechanic. I decribed the issues and he
went through everything trying to find
an issue and he could not. Everything
was getting power and seemed to
function fine. Brought it home and more
of the same, randomly not starting in
the am. I read some more and changed
the starter and ignition fuse even
though they appeared and tested fine.
That seemed to give me a week or two
of no issues. Then my shifter cable
broke and the car sat for about a week
while I fixed it and that seemed to make
it worse. Now it is taking more tries to
start and it will do it even if the car was
just shut off. And the constant running
of the starter and having to bang on it
with a hammer is always a possibility
as it has happened 3 times now. It is
odd because you never know what
you're going to get.  It will make no
noise or it will click or even start turning
over and then not fully start or it will
start right up.
