im trying to pass lights and brake inspection. the car keeps failing because they are saying the emergency brake needs to be adjusted. how do you adjust self adjusting brakes?
I keep being told my emergency brake needs to be adjusted . I was told this
is a self adjusting emergency brake. How do I adust parking brake?
You should check a repair manual but there are probably two adjustments possible. The cable should have an adjustment and if the e-brake is rear drums then the brake shoes can be adjusted. It is also possible that there is an adjustment at the brake lever. This video might help you ----- http://www.ask.com/youtube? q=1999+toyota+avalon+emergency+brake+diagram&v=S_mg_C14 ySI&qsrc=472
If you follow the directions in the video and get it adjusted correctly but they still fail you visit your local Toyota Dealer and let them do it. Then return to the inspection station with the receipt from the Toyota Dealer in hand prepared for an argument! Some inspectors have a "thing" about getting older models off the road. I've run into this and when I know my car is right I have no problem arguing with the inspector and I usually wind up demanding to see the supervisor. HTH. -Jim
