My car blew a head gasket so I'm shopping now. Value $ savings above all else and now torn between getting a new Mitsubishi Mirage (over 40 mpg, great warranties) or a used 2009 Hyundai Elantra (54K miles, 1 owner), priced nicely at $7700 in good condition, which seems it would save me some money at least for the first year or two since I'd save on the car payments .... wondering if anyone has any insight. Never bought a brand new car before so a bit nervous about that ....

Do you want a new car and afford the payments? You will have less maintenance costs. Or you can purchase a nice used car with lower payment and spend some money on upkeep? The smart thing to do is go used. Have the car inspected by a local mechanic to look it over for you, you don't want a problem car. This way you can find that perfect one. Good Luck hunting!
