I have a 1998 chev cavalier z24 - automatic transmission . 2 things happened at the same time. 1 - all of a sudden car is jerking when changing from gears. 2 - engine light came on

#1. is probably related to #2. Since the CEL is on, that tells you there are fault codes stored in memory. Have the car scanned for the codes at your local auto parts store for free and post them back here.

Do as Tom said. It's most likely a bad shift solenoid in the transmission. GMs from this period were notorious for that. HTH. - Jim
