It won't start, except with starter fluid. Why won't it start and stay running

2003 VW Rialta RV, 222FD
Been setting up 6 months, has 1/2 tank of
gas, battery ok, but won't start. Have sprayed
starter fluid, will start then but dies

I'd say it's not getting fuel , do you hear the fuel pump prime the system when you hit the key ? Some cars are particular about proper spark and fuel pressure just having it won't do . Are the injectors firing ?
