I have a 1998 Toyota Tercel and the O/D off light recently came on while I was driving. What exactly does that mean and how can I get it to turn off?

It is a switch for overdrive on the transmission. The switch is a button on the side of the shifter. It should only be switched on when at highway speeds. You want to drive at city speeds with the o/d off light on. Ass backwards if you ask me. I own a 98 and the previous owner drove with the light off which means overdrive on, and ruined the rings in the motor and was blowing blue burning oil.
