In 1997, Toyota streamlined the Tercel lineup, condensing the mainstream trims into one line, the CE. That year, Toyota also offered the limited edition Hawk models, which came with larger tires and special badging. The Hawks came in red, white, and black and were known as Redhawks, Whitehawks, and Blackhawks. Toyota also got rid of the four-speed manual transmission, leaving only the five speed and the three and four-speed automatics.
The 1997 Toyota Tercel came with a choice of two body styles, the two-door coupe and four-door sedan. The CE line was a combination of the spartan standard model and the better-equipped DX. Both body styles came with a 1.5-liter, 93 horsepower four cylinder engine. Not surprisingly, the 1995 Toyota Tercel got excellent gas mileage, at about 30 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.
Owners praise the 1997 Tercel as the perfect car for a new grad or for a commuter who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money. Some drivers complain that the seats can become uncomfortable after long distances, and that the car gets noisy at high speeds.

(8 reviews)Great car + good fuel economy, great aceleration up to 60mph about 6 seconds, stock suspension are a bit fussy, cant take hard cornering, maintenance cost is extremely low, easy to drive, takes all the abuse and still wants more. overall is a great car.
I bought this car in 2006. Its not very fast but it is very fuel friendly. Now a days you need one of this to move around. I have done a couple of thing to keep it looking good and I love it. Next step its going to be making it turbo...
this is a nice little car that gets 35 mpg, and pulls hard since it's manual transmission. Solid built, even though low class, it has everything needed, doesn't have any unnecessary things that cause little problems. Also the car is really light for that reason. It's a real fun car to drive around, especially with gas price this high.
so i've been driving this for a while now and i've done everything to it. It is a great first car gets me to where i want to go and it's great on gas. Nice acceleration, okay top speed, suspension is not that good but its cause your so low to the ground. I love it!!
