Toyota dropped the 4-door Tercel sedan for 1998, leaving only the 2-door sedan. The remaining Tercel model did get a small makeover, including a new grille, front fascia, tail lamps, rear bumper and side moldings. The rear seats also got headrests. This would be the last year that Toyota carried the Tercel. In 2000, Toyota would introduce its new subcompact, the Toyota Echo.
The 1998 Toyota Tercel came in a choice of two body styles, the 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan. The CE line was a combination of the spartan standard model and the better-equipped DX. Both body styles came with a 1.5-liter, 93-horsepower 4-cylinder engine. Not surprisingly, the 1995 Toyota Tercel got excellent gas mileage—about 30 mpg in the city and 39 on the highway.
1998 Toyota Tercel owners are very loyal, praising the car for its reliability and value and dismissing those who characterize the cars as cheap. Some do complain that the car is too small, especially in the back seat and trunk, and that it can be very noisy at freeway speeds.

(9 reviews)Great little car, thou 98 Horse power was a bit low. Standard that it was, was great for fuel economy. Great commuter car. Great in snow as well. I got almost 600 Kilometres out of a tank of gas.I never really had a major problem with it. I replaced the water pump on it, but that was it. My parents still have the car to this day.
Bought for $300; this car endured over 100,000 km of abuse, SOLO 2 lapping days, a trans-continental trip, and extreme weather conditions without so much as missing a beat...until the oil pump failed. Then it was sold for $500. ha.
realiability ?!!!! YES performance ( manual tranny) no u wont race a porsche.. but YES civic, cavalier, focus eater did i said reliability ?
I used to own a 1998 Toyota Tercel, and if you do find one for sale you might want to consider it. Mine was a teal green color, with a grey interior and 4 spd. manual transmission. When I bought it it had 70,000 miles and was about 2 years old. I sold it about 5 years later, with about 132,000 miles on it, and this car had never stranded me once or had ever broken down on me. The gas mileage was excellent-somewhere around 33-35mpg on average. Acceleration was ok (it's not a sports car!) Also some parts are ridiculously expensive- the driver side door handle broke off on me once, and I had to pay almost $80.00 for a replacement! To sum it up this was absolutely the best car I have ever owned, in terms of reliability and dependability. I wish Toyota still made this car!
very good car i really like it because is black and i have a spoiler on the back. But its not a beautiful back because its not confortable to just sleep in it. it miss 2 rims at the back left and at the back right.
