Yes the check engine light will come on because of improper gas cap fit.

Matter of fact that's the #1 reason a CEL will light up. But , it's not the ONLY reason that will light it

Have the computer scanned. Most auto parts stores will do it for free. Post the trouble codes here and we can help further. HTH. -Jim

Good suggestion Jim. I agree, could prevent something from getting worse = more expensive

How the heck does Chrysler pin-point gas cap, when it's a leak in the EVAP somewhere, but what about, say, a hole in the vapor recovery tube?

Hi Fordnut, don't know about Chryslers but my '08 Grand Marquis has a specific "gas cap light" on the dash. If the cap isn't on properly the light will come on. Maybe Chrysler has that too? -Jim

No it doesn't....at least on 99 Chrysler Sebring but first check gas cap ...take off and put back on until it clicks at least twice......will take up to 10 starts to clear CEL If u take to dealer or a shop they will most likely do this then reset computer and charge u 60+ $
