In 1998, the Grand Caravan STD base model gets a few upgrades, including a new engine. Instead of the 2.4-liter, the STD now features the 3.0-liter, 150-hp V6. This is paired with a standard 3-speed automatic. It also benefits from getting the dual sliding doors, previously only an option in the base model. New hooks in the cargo area help hold groceries stable.
The Grand Caravan STD is the most affordable model and you'll see that it has few basic amenities. Other standard features include 14-inch wheels, tinted glass, dual front airbags, and intermittent wipers. You can upgrade to the 3.3-liter engine with 4-speed auto tran, and include power windows and locks, power mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control and ABS brakes. Drivers love the seating and storage capacity, especially the removable third row. They don't love the repair record and transmission problems.

Using the same engine as the base model STD, the 3.0-liter, 150-hp V6, the Grand Caravan SE adds a little more style and creature comforts. Some of its standard features that build on the existing SE ones include power mirrors, 15-inch wheels, tilt steering, ABS brakes, and a cassette player. In all Grand Caravans, dual front airbags come standard.
There are many more options offered with the SE, including two engine choices -- either the 3.3 or 3.8 V6. Air conditioning is still not standard, but is available as an option, as is front and back air conditioning. Other SE extras include a security system, captain's chairs, power driver's seat, fog lights, power heated mirrors, lighted entry, overhead console, and a trip computer. Among favorite features are the Grand Caravan's SE's handling, comfortable seats, removable seats for extra cargo room, and the rear air conditioning. Least favorite features include repair problems surrounding the transmission and serpentine belt.

A minivan is no longer just a people mover, but a house on wheels, complete with many of the creature comforts you'd want from home. Whether hauling cargo or your athletic superstars, the 1998 Grand Caravan LE will get you there in comfort and style. The LE goes one better than the SE by coming standard with a 3.3-liter, 158-hp V6 and 4-speed automatic, with an optional upgrade to a 3.8-liter V6. It comes with ABS brakes like the SE. Standard features beyond what you'll get on the SE include sunscreen glass, trip computer, power windows and locks, lighted and remote entry, overhead console, and power heated mirrors.
Options include leather seats, traction control, a towing package, rear heating, and a roof rack. At 17/24 mpg, the mileage is fairly decent for a large minivan. Grand Caravan LE owners love that it handles like a car, is quiet and comfortable, and has enough space for poeple and luggage combined. They feel it is a great family car with a lot of power for heavy hauls. Transmission repairs haunt the Grand Caravan, as do problems with the electrical system.
