Reviews Summary

Mercedes’ handsome compact SUV continues into the 2025 model year with a few revisions and a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant. With just two powertrain options and a simplified array of trims, the GLC shows us that a simple-yet-measured approach makes it a strong candidate up against compact luxury SUVs from Audi, BMW, Genesis, Lexus, Porsche, and Volvo.

Verdict: The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC-class is a handsome and compelling new car fit for most duties.

Reviews Summary

Many automakers have had a tough time launching electric vehicles, as teething problems have resulted in build-quality issues, gremlins, and production delays. Hyundai, however, got it right from the start with the Ioniq 5. Not only did this compact crossover nail the basics, it has also struck a chord for its stylish looks, fast charging capability, good range, and practicality.

Verdict: Five years into its run, the Ioniq 5 is still the electric vehicle we would recommend to most EV buyers. A drive around Hyundai’s factory in Savannah, Georgia, only reinforced our position.

2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC

10/10

2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5

8/10

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC adhered closely to Mercedes’ contemporary design ethos, presenting a visually appealing option in the compact crossover segment. Its taut lines contributed to a muscular and streamlined silhouette, flowing seamlessly from the iconic Mercedes star-pattern grille to the standard LED headlights. The vehicle's taller, upright cabin and short overhangs suggested a multi-terrain capability, particularly in models without the AMG Line, which featured unpainted wheel arch liners. The GLC's crisp headlights and intricately detailed tail lights ensured its aesthetic appeal would remain fresh for years. The optional 20-inch AMG five-spoke wheels further enhanced its athletic appearance. Inside, the GLC exuded luxury with beautifully designed, contrasting-leather-adorned interior door panels and premium materials. The GLC 350e PHEV model boasted supple white leather seats with heating and ventilation options, offering excellent adjustability and a commanding view of the road. The interior was a blend of haptic controls and high-quality materials, including faux carbon fiber and satin-stitched leather, creating a sophisticated ambiance.

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 combined elements of a 1980s hatchback with modern crossover SUV features, resulting in a unique and appealing design. Its profile was distinctly hatchback-like, yet larger than traditional models like the Volkswagen GTI. Angular lines and a character line rising from the rear wheels to the front doors created a triangular shape defining much of the profile. Dark cladding around the wheels and lower body added to its crossover appeal. The front featured a visor slit housing rectangular headlights, while the rear boasted an integrated spoiler and darkened panels. The XRT model stood out with unique 18-inch alloys, pixel-patterned cladding, and a more purposeful look reminiscent of a rally car. Inside, the Ioniq 5 prioritized utility with a tech-forward approach. The base model offered standard cloth upholstery, while higher trims featured synthetic leather. The interior was equipped with dual 12.3-inch screens and touch controls for the climate system, creating a modern yet somewhat sterile environment typical of contemporary EVs.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC offered a range of powertrains, including the GLC 300 with rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive, and the GLC 350e 4Matic plug-in hybrid. All models were powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The GLC 300 produced 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, while the 350e delivered 201 hp and 236 lb-ft. The GLC 300 featured a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, adding 23 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, achieving a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds. The 350e's hybrid system included a 23.3-kilowatt-hour battery and an electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 313 hp and 406 lb-ft, matching the 300's 0-60 time despite its additional weight. The GLC excelled in urban and highway driving, with its hybrid systems providing ample torque for quick acceleration and passing. The ride quality was smooth, with excellent handling and body control, making it suitable for both road trips and off-road adventures. The braking system, including regenerative braking, was effective, and the 350e's electric range was impressive at 54 miles.

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 offered a variety of powertrains, starting with a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive setup producing 168 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in the base SE Standard Range trim. Other trims offered 220 hp with the same torque. The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration increased output to 320 hp and 446 lb-ft, while the Ioniq 5 N performance model boasted 641 hp and 568 lb-ft. The Limited and XRT trims, both with dual motors, provided quiet and robust power, achieving a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds. The Ioniq 5 featured five regenerative braking settings, from freewheeling to one-pedal driving, enhancing its versatility. The Limited trim offered a smooth ride, while the XRT trim, with its higher ground clearance and all-terrain tires, excelled in off-road conditions. The XRT's terrain modes and improved approach and departure angles made it capable on various terrains, though it lacked some rally-specific features like skid plates. Overall, the Ioniq 5 delivered a balanced driving experience, with the XRT trim offering a unique off-road capability.

Form and function

2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC

2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5

7/10

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC provided a commanding view of the road, with ample hip, shoulder, and legroom in the front seats, even for taller drivers. However, the rear seats were somewhat tight on leg and headroom, a common challenge in the compact crossover segment. The front seats featured a clever design with a curve to maximize rear legroom, though rear passengers couldn't stretch out fully. The GLC's boxy shape and 21.9 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 52.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, made it practical for everyday use. The split rear seat dropped easily, allowing for the transportation of larger items like an XL-sized road bike. The GLC's hybridization contributed to its fuel efficiency, with an average of 29.3 miles per gallon over 273 miles of mixed driving. The 350e's EPA fuel economy was 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined in hybrid mode, with an impressive 60 MPGe city, 70 MPGe highway, and 64 MPGe combined in all-electric mode.

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 offered spacious front seats with standard eight-way power adjustments for the driver and front passenger, except in the base trim. Heated front seats were standard, with the Limited trim adding ventilated seats, driver’s seat memory, and a "Relaxation" seat for the driver. The rear seat provided generous legroom, accommodating two adults comfortably, with heated outboard seats in the Limited trim. Cargo space was slightly smaller than average for a compact crossover, with 26.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 58.5 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Ioniq 5 also featured a small front trunk, adding to its cargo capacity. While its maximum cargo space was less than some gas-powered competitors, it was comparable to the Mustang Mach-E. The steep angle of the rear hatch limited cargo usability slightly, but overall, the Ioniq 5 offered a practical and spacious interior.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC featured the latest third-generation MBUX infotainment system, with haptic controls for the steering wheel, climate, and infotainment functions. The 11.9-inch touchscreen required some adjustment to master the swipe intensity, as overshooting or undershooting could lead to navigation challenges. Despite occasional sluggish touchscreen responses, wireless Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connected seamlessly, and the screen resolution was excellent. The customizable ambient lighting added to the driving experience, especially during nighttime drives. The GLC's Burmester 3D surround sound system, part of the Exclusive Trim package, delivered top-notch audio quality.

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 boasted a modern and user-friendly technology suite, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen under a single glass panel. Standard features included wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and built-in navigation. Higher trims offered a wireless smartphone charger and a head-up display. The base audio system had six speakers, while the XRT and Limited trims featured a Bose eight-speaker unit. The Ioniq 5 also came with a Wi-Fi hotspot and the MyHyundai smartphone app, allowing owners to precondition the car, monitor the state of charge, and more. The infotainment screen was easily accessible, with a straightforward command structure and voice command capabilities. Climate controls were separate from the main screen, enhancing usability.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC came equipped with advanced safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, active parking assistance, automatic high beams, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and active braking assistance. The optional Driver Assistance Package added adaptive cruise control, steering assist, lane-change assist, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, evasive maneuvering, and speed limit assist. These features worked harmoniously, providing a smooth and stress-free driving experience, particularly in stop-and-go traffic.

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 offered a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features included steering support for the blind-spot monitor, a surround-view camera system, and Highway Driving Assist 2 with automatic lane changes. The Ioniq 5 earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, though NHTSA ratings were unavailable. The lane-keep assist and blind-spot camera system were particularly effective, enhancing overall safety.
