Reviews Summary

Toyota Corolla is the most popular automotive nameplate in history, but the compact cars it’s attached to are slowly being usurped by crossover SUVs. So Toyota is trying to achieve the best of both worlds by launching a new Corolla model that’s also a crossover.

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross seeks to expand the Corolla lineup in much the same way that the Corolla Matrix hatchback did two decades ago, adding all-wheel drive (AWD) and more upright bodywork but keeping the Corolla name for familiarity. The Corolla Cross shares the TNGA-C platform, as well as a powertrain, with the Corolla sedan and hatchback, but the exterior styling is all SUV.

The Corolla Cross launches into a crowded market segment. At its media preview, Toyota said it’s counted 20 competitors, including the Chevrolet Trax, Mazda CX-30, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, and Subaru Crosstrek. The Subaru is likely the Corolla Cross’s closest rival, as it’s also a small SUV derivative of an existing compact hatchback.

Built at a new factory in Huntsville, Alabama, the Corolla Cross is scheduled to reach dealerships in October. It will be available in L, LE, and XLE trim levels, with standard front-wheel drive (FWD) or optional AWD. We got a chance to sample all three during a day of driving around Austin, Texas.

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

8/10

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross

6/10

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 was a bold step into the future of electrified mobility, marking a departure from the original Ioniq's hybrid roots. This new model was the first in Hyundai's standalone Ioniq brand, dedicated solely to electric vehicles. Its exterior design was a mix of minimalistic lines and intricate Parametric Pixel elements, giving it a concept car vibe. The interior, contrastingly, was a serene "Living Space" with sustainable materials and a focus on comfort, featuring a unique Relaxation mode for the driver's seat.

In contrast, the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross took a more conservative approach to design, aligning closely with its larger sibling, the RAV4. Its compact size was balanced with a practical and spacious interior, offering more room than the Toyota C-HR. The Corolla Cross featured subtle styling details and a straightforward cabin layout reminiscent of the Corolla sedan and hatchback. While the interior materials felt basic, the vehicle provided essential comfort and utility for everyday use.

Performance

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross

5/10

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 offered a range of powertrains and configurations, with rear-wheel drive as standard and all-wheel drive available. The base SE Standard Range model delivered 168 horsepower and a 220-mile range, while the extended-range variants offered up to 225 hp and 303 miles of range. The AWD version boasted 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque, though its range dropped to 256 miles. The Ioniq 5's performance was solid for a midsize crossover, with features like Sport mode and adjustable regenerative braking enhancing the driving experience.

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross was powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 169 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT. While the engine provided adequate acceleration, it struggled at higher speeds, and the CVT exhibited typical issues like engine droning. The optional AWD system, shared with the Toyota Camry, offered some versatility but didn't significantly enhance handling. The Corolla Cross's ride quality was decent, but it wasn't designed for sporty driving or off-roading.

Form and function

The Hyundai Ioniq 5's E-GMP platform maximized interior space, offering a roomy cabin with 133.7 cubic feet of total volume. Its longer wheelbase provided ample passenger space, and the interior featured a moveable center console and comfortable leatherette seats. The Ioniq 5 prioritized passenger comfort over cargo space, with 27.2 cubic feet of rear cargo capacity.

The Toyota Corolla Cross provided more rear-seat room and cargo space than the Corolla hatchback, with 26.5 cubic feet of cargo space in FWD models. While it offered more space than some rivals, the interior felt less comfortable, with hard seats and limited legroom. The upright driving position was SUV-like, but storage spaces were minimal.

Technology

10/10

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross

7/10

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 impressed with its advanced technology, including a high-voltage charging system and vehicle-to-load capabilities. It supported ultra-fast charging, reaching 80% battery capacity in 18 minutes, and offered two years of free fast-charging sessions. The Ioniq 5 featured a redesigned Blue Link app, digital key, and 12.3-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment, all with anti-glare coatings.

The Toyota Corolla Cross came with a standard 7-inch touchscreen, with larger screens available on higher trims. It included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. While the infotainment system was user-friendly, it lacked sophistication, and the optional digital instrument cluster was cluttered. The Corolla Cross offered basic connectivity features, with additional USB ports and wireless charging on higher trims.

Safety

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was equipped with Hyundai SmartSense, offering a comprehensive suite of safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and Highway Drive Assist I. This Level 2 semi-autonomous system learned the driver's habits for a personalized experience. Although crash-test ratings were not available, Hyundai's strong safety record suggested high marks for the Ioniq 5.

The Toyota Corolla Cross featured Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, with standard driver-assist technologies like forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control. Higher trims added blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. While crash-test ratings were pending, the Corolla Cross offered a solid array of safety features.
