2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

2024 Kia Sorento Reviews Summary

On the small end of the midsize SUV spectrum, the Sorento is a classic in-betweener. It’s big enough to get a standard third row and has more room than compact crossovers like the Toyota RAV4, but it’s smaller and cheaper than most three-row midsizes, including Kia’s Telluride and the Ford Explorer. Gas-powered 2024 Sorentos get a visual glow-up as well as major infotainment and safety system updates, and a new X-Pro trim. Hybrid and PHEV Sorentos, which we review separately, won’t get these changes until 2025.

Verdict: The 2024 Kia Sorento’s new looks make it seem bigger and fancier, and the X-Pro adds capability. There are more safety features and the Sorento’s tech is even easier to use. Demerits remain, namely the diminutive third row and pricey top trims, but the 2024 Sorento has lots to offer family buyers.

Look and feel
2023 Volvo XC90
10/10
2024 Kia Sorento
8/10
The 2023 Volvo XC90 has undergone a remarkable transformation from the utilitarian designs of bygone decades. With an emphasis on a more contemporary aesthetic, its stoic grille and “Thor’s Hammer” headlights express a distinct sophistication. The vehicle maintains its boxy silhouette but with a modern twist, ensuring it stands out in a sea of curvy competitors. Inside, the XC90 boasts an opulent environment marked by Nappa leather upholstery and tasteful wood inlays, promoting a serene driving experience. Conversely, the 2024 Kia Sorento received its first major update since 2021, adopting design cues from its siblings like the Telluride. It features a more rugged appearance with a redesigned front and pretty LED taillights that enhance its visual appeal. Inside, Kia has elevated the feel of the cabin with higher-quality materials and a cleaner dashboard layout, making it more contemporary and aligned with higher-end competitors.
Performance

The 2023 Volvo XC90 shifted away from its older engine options to introduce the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. These alternatives slightly reduce the output — the B6 delivers up to 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque — but enhance fuel efficiency. These setups focus on providing a balanced ride that favors comfort over dynamic driving, featuring an unobtrusive stop-start system and refined cruising capabilities. Meanwhile, the 2024 Kia Sorento offers a choice between a standard 2.5-liter engine and a more vigorous 281-horsepower turbocharged option. The latter ensures more responsive driving, which complements the Sorento’s improved handling and comfort. Off-road versions like the X-Pro are crafted for mild off-road adventures, presenting an appealing package for the more adventurous.
Form and function

Cargo space and comfort in the third-row seats are important factors for three-row SUV buyers. The Volvo XC90 offers limited cargo space with all seats in use (12.5 cubic feet), but this expands to a maximum of 65.5 cubic feet. The interior is elegantly minimalistic yet may pose practical challenges regarding storage for everyday items. The Kia Sorento’s design optimizes space more efficiently, providing up to 72.1 cubic feet when all rear seats are folded. The third row is tight (29.6 inches of legroom), making it suitable for children or short trips for adults. However, the thoughtful layout and better use of space make the Sorento a versatile family vehicle.
Technology

2024 Kia Sorento

Volvo’s integration of Google’s OS into the XC90’s infotainment system provides a seamless and intuitive interface but lacks physical controls for some users' preferences. This setup includes an array of connected features and apps, enhancing the tech-forward feel of the cabin. Kia’s Sorento steps up with a unified 12.3-inch display on higher trims, incorporating new software that simplifies interaction and visibility. Standard features across the lineup include navigation and high-quality connectivity options, reflecting Kia’s commitment to technology accessibility.
Safety

The XC90 continues Volvo’s legacy of safety with top marks from major safety organizations and a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies as standard. These features underscore Volvo’s focus on safety without compromise. Kia’s updated Drivewise technology in the Sorento introduces new sensors and machine-learning capabilities, keeping it competitive. Although it awaits the latest safety ratings, the presence of advanced safety equipment is substantial and innovative.
