2023 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2023 Nissan Rogue is critical to the automaker’s success. Last year, this compact crossover SUV was the 16th best-selling vehicle in America, significantly outselling the company’s Altima midsize sedan and every other Nissan available in U.S. showrooms. Two years ago, Nissan redesigned the Rogue. Last year, it added a new turbocharged engine. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Rogue SV is available with a new Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim, while the Rogue Platinum adds Amazon Alexa compatibility. Still, the Rogue faces fresh competition from the redesigned Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50, and a plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander.

2024 Hyundai Palisade Reviews Summary

Within its segment, the Hyundai Palisade is a terrific family hauler, checking nearly all of the right boxes. Plus, it has a distinctive design, upscale materials, and thoughtful amenities. After a refresh for the 2023 model year, the 2024 Palisade returns with standard three-zone automatic climate control, Bluelink+ connected services, and the range-topping Calligraphy Night Edition. If you guessed it comes with blacked-out trim and wheels, pat yourself on the back.

Verdict: Stylish and safe, powerful and enjoyable to drive, and roomy for people and cargo, the 2024 Hyundai Palisade is a winner. Then, when you consider the added value inherent in buying this midsize three-row crossover SUV, choosing a Hyundai Palisade is both a logical and an emotional decision.

2023 Nissan Rogue

8/10

2024 Hyundai Palisade

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Rogue was designed with a conservative approach, featuring proper proportions, chiseled styling, and just the right amount of SUV detailing to convey a rugged sense of purpose. It was an appealing vehicle, critical for attracting buyers who prioritize aesthetics. The Rogue lineup included S, SV, SL, and Platinum trims, with prices ranging from $27,360 to $37,140, plus a $1,295 destination charge. Our test vehicle, a Platinum trim with the Premium option package and additional features, had an MSRP of $43,100, placing it in entry-luxury territory. The Platinum trim offered upscale upgrades, including soft, diamond-pattern leather seats and high-quality materials.

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade stood out with its distinctive styling, making it easily recognizable among family-friendly SUVs. Hyundai offered the Palisade in SE, SEL, XRT, Limited, Calligraphy, and the new Calligraphy Night Edition trims, with prices ranging from $36,650 to $53,850, excluding the $1,395 destination charge. Our test vehicle, a Calligraphy Night Edition with extra-cost Hyper White paint and carpeted floor mats, had an MSRP of $55,930. The Calligraphy Night Edition featured a blacked-out appearance with dark chrome and gloss black exterior trim, badges, and wheels, available only in Abyss Black or Hyper White paint colors. The interior boasted leather with artificial suede inserts, an artificial suede headliner, and quality upholstery, giving it a luxury SUV feel.

Performance

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

2024 Hyundai Palisade

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Rogue initially came with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). However, for the 2022 model year, Nissan replaced it with a new turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine featuring the automaker’s exclusive variable compression design. This VC-Turbo engine produced 201 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 225 pound-feet of torque from 2,800 rpm to 4,000 rpm. The CVT included paddle shifters, and the engine powered the Rogue’s front wheels unless equipped with the optional AWD system. The Rogue offered Eco, Auto, and Sport driving modes, with AWD versions adding Off-Road and Snow modes. Despite the engine’s unusual note and some vibration, the Rogue felt responsive in urban and suburban driving. However, it lacked passing power on the highway. The EPA estimated a combined fuel economy of 31 mpg, but our test vehicle averaged 28.9 mpg. The Rogue’s suspension provided a good balance of ride compliance and body control, though the steering felt lifeless.

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade featured a 3.8-liter V6 engine generating 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Palisade offered several driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, Sport, Smart, and Snow, with the ability to lock the AWD system for off-road travel. The V6 engine provided plenty of power and satisfying acceleration, with the transmission always in the right gear. The AWD system expertly distributed power on dirt and gravel roads. The EPA estimated a combined fuel economy of 21 mpg for AWD models, but our test vehicle averaged 18.8 mpg in Comfort mode. The Palisade’s suspension offered a firm yet comfortable ride, with excellent outward visibility and a top-down surround-view camera for city driving. On mountain and canyon roads, the Palisade displayed athleticism with predictable handling and reliable brakes.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue served as a practical replacement for a traditional family car, offering ease of entry and exit, better visibility, and a larger cargo area. The Rogue comfortably accommodated four people, with the option to carry a fifth person. Our Platinum test vehicle featured a triple-zone automatic climate control system, a dual-panel panoramic sunroof, and premium semi-aniline leather upholstery with diamond-stitched inserts. The front seats were heated and designed for comfort, though ventilated seats were not available. The rear doors opened to a nearly 90-degree angle, making it easy to load and unload kids. The back seat, however, was less comfortable, with a low-mounted cushion and diamond-shaped pleats. The Rogue offered 36.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat, expandable to 74.1 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade offered a range of seating options, from cloth seats in the base SE trim to premium Nappa leather with microfiber inserts in the Calligraphy Night Edition. Heated eight-way power-adjustable front seats were standard on all but the SE trim, with additional comfort features available on higher trims. Our Calligraphy Night Edition test vehicle featured simulated suede seat inserts, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated front seats. The Palisade provided configurable storage between the front seats, with a large storage bin, wireless smartphone charger, and additional trays. Second-row passengers enjoyed captain’s chairs with optional heating and ventilation, while the third row offered more comfort and room than most rivals. The Palisade provided 18 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expandable to 86.4 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue featured an older infotainment system with a standard 8-inch or available 9-inch touchscreen display. Our test vehicle had the 9-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, NissanConnect services with Wi-Fi hotspot access, and a navigation system. It also included a wireless smartphone charging pad and a Bose premium audio system. Alexa Built-in was new for 2023 but had limited functionality in our test vehicle. The Rogue also featured a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and a head-up display (HUD), both of which worked well.

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade came with a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, available starting with the SEL Premium option package. All Palisades featured a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth connectivity for two devices, Bluelink+ connected services, Wi-Fi access, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a rear-seat Quiet Mode. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto required a USB-A cable. The Palisade also offered a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, a digital key function, a digital rearview mirror, and a semi-autonomous remote parking system. The available head-up display provided plenty of data, though it did not work well with cheap polarized sunglasses.
