2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional body-on-frame SUV platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 46.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Honda HR-V Reviews Summary

Honda’s subcompact SUV gets a makeover inside and out. Previously based on the Fit, the new HR-V shares the global architecture that also underpins the Civic.

Honda continues to narrow trim options: There were once as many as five, but the Touring trim level got the axe for the 2022 model year, and the EX has now left the lineup as well. The three remaining trims for 2023 are LX, Sport, and EX-L. We drove the top trim, EX-L, through the mountains of Washington's Columbia River Gorge.

New styling plus the newly standard Honda Sensing suite of safety features put this latest HR-V back at the front of the pack it led when it debuted in 2016.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Honda HR-V

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line Special Edition was a striking vehicle, especially in its Black Onyx color. This model eliminated almost all chrome from its exterior, giving it a bold, monochromatic appearance. Despite its modern touches, the GX's design felt dated, reminiscent of its predecessors from two decades ago. Inside, the cabin was crafted with the high-quality materials Lexus is known for, offering a quiet and refined environment. However, the overall design theme remained similar to earlier models, which might not appeal to those seeking a contemporary look.

In contrast, the 2023 Honda HR-V underwent a significant styling update, presenting a more sophisticated and modern appearance. The new design featured a lowered beltline and simplified detailing, resulting in a sleeker look with cleaner lines. The test model in Nordic Forest Pearl highlighted these changes beautifully. Inside, the HR-V's cabin was thoughtfully designed, with new seats and a refined interior that felt more upscale than its price might suggest. The EX-L trim, in particular, offered perforated leather seats and dual-zone climate control, enhancing the overall comfort and appeal.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 Honda HR-V

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Despite its power, the GX's performance was not particularly potent, taking 7.8 seconds to reach 60 mph. The vehicle's full-time 4WD system and six-speed automatic transmission contributed to its off-road capabilities, with a maximum towing capacity of 6,500 pounds. However, its fuel economy was a downside, with an EPA estimate of 16 mpg in combined driving. The GX's Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System helped improve ride stability, but the steering and brake pedal were less refined.

The 2023 Honda HR-V featured a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, delivering 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. This was an improvement over the previous model, but the HR-V was still not overpowered. The updated CVT with Step-Shift function aimed to mimic traditional automatic transmission sounds. The HR-V offered multiple drive modes, including Normal, Snow, and ECON, with Sport mode available for a more dynamic driving experience. The new suspension system and widened tracks made the HR-V enjoyable to drive, though it remained noisier at higher speeds.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2023 Honda HR-V

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position and clear visibility, but its interior design was somewhat outdated. The Black Line Special Edition featured NuLuxe upholstery and black ash wood trim, with heated and ventilated front seats. However, accessing the rear seats was challenging due to narrow door openings, and the third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space. The GX's side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading, with limited cargo capacity of 11.6 cubic feet behind the third row and 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded.

The 2023 Honda HR-V, while compact, provided a well-thought-out interior with a practical center console and ample storage options. The fastback design slightly reduced rear-seat headroom, but the HR-V still offered competitive cargo space of 24.4 cubic feet with seats up and 55.1 cubic feet with them folded. The new rear seat hinge design improved entry and egress, and the overall passenger volume was generous for a subcompact SUV. The HR-V's interior dimensions were slightly adjusted from the previous model, with improved front legroom.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Honda HR-V

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX introduced a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a significant upgrade from previous models. It included standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, along with a CD player and Lexus Enform connected services. However, the placement of stereo controls was awkward, and the system retained the outdated Remote Touch Interface. The dual-screen view and excellent voice recognition were highlights, but the technology offerings were limited compared to competitors.

The 2023 Honda HR-V featured a tablet-style infotainment display, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard across all trims. The EX-L trim offered a 9-inch display with wireless connectivity and a wireless charging pad. The HR-V's system included a 7-inch digital gauge cluster and a Smart Shortcuts feature, enhancing user experience. The audio system varied by trim, with the EX-L offering an eight-speaker setup and additional connectivity options like WiFi and SiriusXM.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Honda HR-V

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings, but it came with the Lexus Safety System+, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Additional features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were standard, but the GX missed some advanced safety technologies found in competitors. The absence of certain driving aids might appeal to those who prefer fewer electronic interventions.

The 2023 Honda HR-V made Honda Sensing standard across all trims, offering a comprehensive suite of safety features. This included adaptive cruise control, collision-mitigation braking, and lane-keeping assist. New features for 2023 included traffic-sign recognition and traffic jam assist. The HR-V's safety systems were generally unobtrusive and effective, with a new single-camera system improving visibility. While crash-test ratings for the 2023 model were pending, the 2022 HR-V had received favorable scores.
