2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of.

The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.

2023 Hyundai Palisade Reviews Summary

The Palisade has topped Hyundai’s SUV lineup since 2020. For the 2023 model year, Hyundai’s given its flagship vehicle an exterior facelift and packed it with even more standard and optional tech and safety features. The more rugged XRT trim previously seen in the smaller Tucson and Santa Fe models joins the lineup, bringing the total number of Palisade trims to five: SE, SEL, XRT, Limited, and Calligraphy.

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2023 Hyundai Palisade

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 boasted a distinctive design that set it apart from its siblings in the Genesis lineup. It featured the brand's signature quad LED strips for headlights and taillights, along with a prominent shield-shaped grille. The GV70's sloping roofline and ribbed detailing added a touch of athleticism to its profile, blending the visual bulk of an SUV with sleek, car-like elements. The Sport Prestige model further enhanced its character with unique styling features, including a model-specific front fascia, 21-inch wheels with a web pattern, and dark chrome trim. Inside, the GV70's interior was inspired by the cross-section of an airplane's wing, with an elliptical theme that extended to the controls, door handles, and armrests. The design was minimalistic, with a perched touchscreen and hidden air vents, creating a baroque spaceship-like ambiance. The interior offered a range of color options and luxurious materials, such as Nappa leather upholstery with suede seat inserts in the Sport Prestige model.

The 2023 Hyundai Palisade, as Hyundai's largest SUV, received a styling update that gave it an even more commanding presence on the road. The new front fascia featured bolder strokes, framing new headlights and a squared-off grille that contributed to its stronger look. LED accents, daytime running lights, and headlights were standard across the lineup, while LED taillights were standard on SEL and higher trims. The top Calligraphy trim stood out with premium rear accent lighting, body-color bumpers, and a unique grille design. The new XRT trim added a dark grille, roof cross rails, and black 20-inch wheels. The Palisade's interior was stylish and attractive, with premium Nappa leather in the Calligraphy trim and a dual-pane sunroof that brightened the cabin. The seating configuration allowed for seven or eight passengers, with second-row captain's chairs in higher trims. The Palisade offered a comfortable ride and a range of features, including heated and ventilated seats in the first and second rows, making it a welcoming and accommodating vehicle for passengers.

Performance

2022 Genesis GV70

7/10

2023 Hyundai Palisade

8/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two powertrain options: a base 2.5-liter turbo-four engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The GV70 also featured a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, emphasizing its sporty character. The Sport+ drive mode further enhanced the driving experience by holding high revs and sharpening throttle response. However, the GV70's chassis felt big and heavy, lacking the sharpness of some competitors. The steering was adequate but not precise enough for spirited driving. The GV70 excelled on highways and in urban settings, but its firm ride and lack of solidity detracted from its luxury appeal.

The 2023 Hyundai Palisade came with a single powertrain option: a 3.8-liter V6 engine producing 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain was competitive for its class, offering more power than some rivals. The Palisade's eight-speed automatic transmission could be controlled with paddle shifters, and AWD was available as an option. The HTRAC AWD system demonstrated its capability on a muddy off-road course, although the Palisade was not designed for rock-crawling. The Palisade's towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds and dedicated Tow Mode added to its versatility. In terms of fuel economy, the Palisade achieved 19 mpg city, 27 highway, and 22 combined with FWD, while AWD models achieved 19 city, 25 highway, and 21 combined.

Form and function

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2023 Hyundai Palisade

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered mid-pack interior space for its segment. Despite its car-like roofline, it provided front-seat headroom comparable to a Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and back-seat headroom similar to a BMW X3. Legroom in both rows was adequate, and rear-seat visibility was good. Cargo space measured 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded, placing the GV70 in the middle ground of its segment. The interior design, while daring, compromised storage space, with a slim center console and thin door pockets. The front seats in the Sport Prestige model were heavily bolstered, offering heating, ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions.

The 2023 Hyundai Palisade provided ample space for passengers and cargo. It offered 44.1 inches of legroom in the front row, 42.4 in the second, and 31.4 in the third, surpassing the Toyota Highlander. Passenger volume measured 155.3 cubic feet, and the Palisade's seating configuration allowed for easy access to the third row. Cargo space totaled 18 cubic feet with all seats in place, 45.8 behind the second row, and 86.4 with all but the front-row seats folded flat. The Palisade featured HVAC vents in all three rows, cupholders for each passenger, and a center console with a phone holder and storage space. The layout of physical buttons and knobs was intuitive, and automatic dual-zone climate control was standard in SEL and higher trims.

Technology

2022 Genesis GV70

2023 Hyundai Palisade

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of technology features. The standard infotainment system included a 14.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system's tile-based layout and crisp graphics were user-friendly, and the glass rotary controller added a touch of luxury. Higher trim levels offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 3D effect and a 12-inch head-up display. The GV70 also featured a digital-key system, allowing drivers to use a smartphone or fingerprint scanner to start the car. Genesis Connected Services provided remote access to the vehicle's cameras and other features, enhancing convenience and security.

The 2023 Hyundai Palisade raised the bar with its technology offerings. It became the first Hyundai to offer WiFi hotspot capability, standard on all trims. A 12.3-inch color touchscreen infotainment system was also standard, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and more. A premium 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system was available in SEL models and standard in Limited and Calligraphy. The Palisade's remote accessibility and management features were impressive, with Hyundai's Bluelink system allowing remote control of various functions. The Palisade also introduced Digital Key 2 Touch, compatible with both Android and Apple devices, enabling key sharing and customization.

Safety

2022 Genesis GV70

2023 Hyundai Palisade

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 came equipped with a range of standard safety features, including lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, blind-spot and forward collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-attention monitor. It also featured Highway Driving Assist, which added automated lane centering to adaptive cruise control. The GV70 included eight standard airbags, including a front-center airbag. Optional driver-assist features included Highway Driving Assist 2, which added lane-change functionality and navigation-based adaptive cruise control.

The 2023 Hyundai Palisade built on its predecessor's safety reputation, with the 2022 model earning a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. The 2023 Palisade introduced new active and passive safety features, including second-row side-impact airbags. Hyundai's Smart Sense suite of safety features was standard, with highlights such as forward collision avoidance, driver attention warning, and lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot collision avoidance and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance were newly standard. The Palisade also offered Highway Driving Assist I and II, with the latter available on higher trims. Safe exit warning and rear seat occupant alert were standard on most trims.
