2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of.

The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.

2022 Chevrolet Blazer Reviews Summary

Have you ever found yourself thinking that you’d love to have a new Chevy Camaro but what you really need is a midsize SUV? If so, you’ll want to consider the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer, a Camaro-influenced crossover that seats up to five people and carries up to 64.2 cubic feet of cargo. However, unlike Blazers of yore, the 2022 Blazer is best used on pavement. Generally speaking, though, aside from its sporty styling and overall adequacy, there isn’t much here to titillate a typical SUV buyer. Or Camaro dreamer.

Look and feel

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

7/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 presented a unique blend of ruggedness and sleekness, inheriting some styling elements from other Genesis models while maintaining its distinct appearance. It featured quad LED strips for headlights and taillights, a large shield-shaped grille, and a sloping roofline that leaned more towards a fastback than a traditional SUV. The ribbed detailing added a muscular profile, and the Sport Prestige models boasted unique styling features like 21-inch wheels with a web pattern and dark chrome trim. Inside, the GV70's interior was inspired by an airplane wing's cross-section, with a minimalistic design that included a rotary gear selector and infotainment controller, offering a luxurious feel with options like Nappa leather upholstery and suede seat inserts.

In contrast, the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer offered a design inspired by the Camaro, both inside and out. The Blazer's exterior featured a distinctive black trim that extended from the lower rear bumper, giving it an unfinished appearance. Inside, the Blazer's infotainment and climate control systems echoed the Camaro's design, with an 8-inch touchscreen and large round center air vents. The interior was marked by hard plastic surfaces, but the red interior accents in the RS model matched the exterior paint, adding a layer of sophistication. The Blazer's cabin was functional, with plenty of storage space and a sporty appearance, though the quality of materials left room for improvement.

Performance

2022 Genesis GV70

7/10

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

5/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two engine options: a base 2.5-liter turbo-four engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The GV70 included features like a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, emphasizing its sporty character. However, despite the powertrain's capabilities, the GV70's chassis felt big and heavy, lacking the sharpness of competitors like the Acura RDX or BMW X3. The steering was adequate but not precise enough for spirited driving, and the ride was firm even in Comfort mode.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer came standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Blazer RS featured a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 308 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, offering a more sophisticated dual-clutch AWD system. The V6 engine provided satisfying acceleration, though it was often loud and unrefined. The Blazer RS felt firm and sporty in city and highway driving, but its performance on winding roads was less impressive, with a suspension that bounced too much and a nine-speed automatic that was slow to downshift. The steering in Sport mode felt artificially heavy, and the Blazer's overall driving dynamics didn't match its sporty styling.

Form and function

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

6/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered mid-pack interior space for its segment, with front-seat headroom comparable to a Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and back-seat headroom similar to a BMW X3. Cargo space measured 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded, placing the GV70 in the middle ground of its class. The interior design, while daring, compromised storage space, with a slim center console and thin door pockets. The front seats in the Sport Prestige model were heavily bolstered, offering heating, ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions, though some controls were buried in touchscreen menus.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer provided a comfortable and functional interior, with black leather upholstery and red perforations lending a sporty appearance. The steering wheel offered power tilt and telescopic adjustment, and both front seats featured power adjustment, heating, and ventilation. The Blazer's back seat was wide and flat, with ample legroom and the ability to slide forward and back for added cargo or passenger space. Storage space was impressive, with a large glove compartment, center armrest bin, and door panel shelves. The Blazer's cargo area measured 30.5 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 64.2 cubic feet with them folded, though the power rear liftgate's hands-free operation was hit-and-miss.

Technology

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

The 2022 Genesis GV70 was equipped with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system's tile-based layout and crisp graphics made it user-friendly, and the glass rotary controller added a touch of luxury. Higher trim levels offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 3D effect and a 12-inch head-up display. The GV70 also included a digital-key feature, a fingerprint scanner for starting the car, and a radar-based rear-seat monitor. Genesis Connected Services provided remote camera activation, driver profiles, and other features, free for three years.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer's infotainment system featured an 8-inch touchscreen with high-resolution graphics and a modern appearance. It included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, with an upgraded version offering satellite radio and connected navigation. The system was easy to use, with separate stereo volume and tuning functions and climate controls. The Blazer also offered enhanced voice recognition, wireless smartphone charging, and an 8-speaker Bose audio system. Safety features included rear parking sensors, a high-resolution reversing camera, and a 360-degree surround-view camera, though rear visibility was limited.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 came standard with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, blind-spot and forward collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-attention monitor. It also featured Highway Driving Assist with automated lane centering and adaptive cruise control, as well as eight airbags, including a front-center airbag. Optional features included Highway Driving Assist 2 with lane-change functionality and navigation-based adaptive cruise control.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer was equipped with Chevy Safety Assist, which included forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. It also featured a rear-seat reminder system and Teen Driver technology. Available safety upgrades included a vibrating Safety Alert Seat, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Blazer's advanced driving assistance systems were effective and user-friendly, though its headlights did not receive high ratings from the IIHS.
