2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

Redesigned for 2020, the GLE-Class is the second-most-popular Mercedes-Benz in the U.S. It's a midsize luxury SUV in every traditional sense, but because Mercedes has way too much time and money to develop cars, the newest GLE has comfort and technology that border on ridiculous. The GLE Coupe models are brand-new for 2021 and among the strangest vehicles on the planet. Among the eight variants of this big Benz, at least one might fit your lifestyle, if not your budget.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Reviews Summary

Third-row seats add weight and reduce cargo space, so if you know you don’t need one but still want a roomy, midsize SUV, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is a great choice.

This model year, a new plug-in hybrid version is the big news, but the standard 2022 Santa Fe model lineup gains a new XRT trim level that is, in Hyundai’s words, “designed to convey an outdoor lifestyle.” In plain language, that means it gets a mixture of blacked-out exterior details, unique black alloy wheels, additional lower body cladding, fake front and rear skid plates, nearly useless running boards, and roof-rail crossbars that look like basket handles.

More importantly, Hyundai also expands the availability of blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist to the Santa Fe SE trim level, albeit not until later in the year.

Look and feel

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE

6/10

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

7/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE was a vehicle that, while not particularly striking in its exterior design, offered a more refined interior experience. The exterior design seemed to lack the cohesive elegance found in some of its competitors, with a front that promised aggression but a rear that fell short of expectations. Despite this, the interior was a different story, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship with quality materials and a bold color scheme. The interior's design was both luxurious and functional, with features like LED-outlined grab handles and a spacious layout that provided a sense of opulence.

In contrast, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe, particularly in its XRT trim, did not impress with its exterior enhancements. The XRT's visual updates, such as side steps and a lack of contrasting colors, did little to elevate its appearance. However, the interior was thoughtfully designed, offering comfort and quality at a reasonable price point. The cabin was practical, with stain-resistant fabric and ample space for passengers, making it a suitable choice for families. Despite its lack of upscale feel compared to higher trims, the Santa Fe XRT provided a comfortable and functional environment.

Performance

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE

10/10

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

6/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE excelled in performance with its advanced air suspension and turbocharged engines. The GLE 350 featured a 255 hp engine, while the GLE 450 offered a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with 362 hp. The AMG GLE 53 took it further with 429 hp, and the GLE 580 boasted a twin-turbo V8 with 483 hp. The top-tier AMG GLE 63 S delivered a staggering 603 hp. The GLE's hybrid system, integrated with a 48-volt battery, provided additional power and seamless engine start-stop functionality. Despite its power, the GLE's fuel efficiency was average, with the GLE 450 achieving 21/26/23 mpg. The GLE's ride quality and handling were exceptional, offering a smooth and controlled driving experience.

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe XRT, equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 191 hp, was adequate for everyday driving but lacked the power for more demanding situations. The eight-speed automatic transmission performed well, and the SUV offered various driving modes for different conditions. The Santa Fe's fuel economy was decent, averaging 22.3 mpg, with the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine in higher trims providing more power and similar efficiency. The Santa Fe's ride and handling were composed, with excellent suspension isolation and a quiet cabin, making it a comfortable choice for daily commutes and road trips.

Form and function

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

8/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a spacious interior with optional third-row seating, accommodating up to seven passengers. The second-row seats featured power controls for added comfort, while the cargo capacity was generous, with 34 cubic feet behind the second row and 75 cubic feet with all rows folded. The Coupe variant, however, had reduced cargo space due to its sloping roofline. The GLE's usability was enhanced by the MBUX infotainment system, which simplified controls and provided a more intuitive interface.

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe XRT provided a comfortable and practical interior with dual-zone climate control and stain-resistant fabric. The driver's seat was power-adjustable, and the rear seats offered ample space for passengers, including children in safety seats. The Santa Fe's cargo space was adequate, with 36.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 72.1 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Smart Tailgate feature added convenience, although it occasionally opened unintentionally. Overall, the Santa Fe's interior was well-suited for family use.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE was equipped with a 12-inch touchscreen display featuring Interior Assistant for gesture control. The system offered a range of features, including seat kinetics, ambient lighting, and a natural voice assistant. The GLE's infotainment system was highly customizable, with options for navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The AMG models included a Track Pace app for performance enthusiasts, and the semi-automated driving features provided added convenience and safety.

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe XRT featured a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Standard features included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and Bluelink connected services. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with large knobs and clear graphics.
