2020 RAM 2500 Reviews Summary

Heavy-duty trucks are all about headroom. It's packing a half-ton of timber in the bed without feeling a thing in the cab, or pulling 8,000 pounds and knowing there's another 8,000 or more in reserve. While it's acceptable to max out a light-duty truck on occasion, doing so puts excessive stress on the powertrain, brakes, and tires. HD trucks like the 2020 Ram 2500 are flashier and monstrous in size, but their posture is serious. If your life requires a truck like this, then I’d recommend you indulge in the Ram’s top-grade luxury, technology, and capability.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Reviews Summary

Full-size heavy-duty trucks are built with a purpose. Whereas many light-duty trucks are many things to many buyers, heavy-duty pickups do all these things plus tow and haul an incredible amount. This would seem like an incredible challenge; offer all the creature comforts and amenities you might find in a family sedan but with world-beating capability. And yet massive trucks like the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD are able to expertly deliver on these day-to-day needs while also being some of the most capable vehicles on the road today.

Look and feel
2020 RAM 2500
10/10
2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD
6/10

The 2020 RAM 2500 stood out with its elegant design, setting itself apart from the more rugged appearances of its competitors. Its grille, tailored for each of the six trim levels, added a touch of sophistication, while the chrome or body-color bumper options provided a sleek finish. The LED headlights on the upper trims were well-proportioned, complementing the truck's domed hood. The RAM 2500's design echoed the smaller RAM 1500 but was expanded to fit its larger frame. The truck's carlike demeanor was evident in its rounded edges and smoother body panels, and the Limited trim's 20-inch chrome wheels and LED taillights added to its upscale appearance. Inside, the RAM 2500 impressed with its high-quality materials and craftsmanship, especially in the Laramie Longhorn and Limited trims. The interior featured soft-grained leather, intricate stitching, and light wood trim, creating a luxurious atmosphere akin to a Mercedes. The attention to detail extended to the grab handles and shifter knob, and the optional 12-inch vertical touchscreen elevated the truck's class, making it a standout in the heavy-duty pickup segment.

In contrast, the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD's styling was polarizing, with a front end resembling a vintage furnace or freight train. Despite its bold exterior, the cabin offered a more conventional design, focusing on space over refinement. The Silverado's interior was vast, akin to a living room, and the trim levels ranged from the basic W/T to the luxurious High Country. Standard features included USB ports, vinyl seat trim, and a 7-inch touchscreen, with higher trims adding amenities like leather upholstery, heated seats, and advanced trailering systems. The High Country trim, comparable to the GMC Sierra Denali HD, featured premium touches like a Bose sound system and chrome side steps. The Silverado's design emphasized functionality, with integrated bed steps and additional step-ups for easier access to the truck's large frame.

Performance
2020 RAM 2500
9/10
2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD
9/10

The 2020 RAM 2500 offered a choice between two powerful engine options. The 6.4-liter Hemi V8 delivered 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque, paired with a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. This configuration allowed for a maximum payload of 4,380 pounds and a towing capacity of up to 17,350 pounds. The diesel variant, a 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six, produced 370 horsepower and an impressive 850 lb-ft of torque, enabling the RAM 2500 to tow up to 19,780 pounds. Despite its size, the RAM 2500 was unexpectedly quick on the highway, though its steering was loose and the ride was stiff compared to the RAM 1500. The diesel's exhaust brake was a standout feature, providing effective braking without using the pedal, and the truck averaged close to 19 mpg over 515 miles.

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD also offered two engine choices. The standard 6.6-liter V8 produced 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The optional Duramax turbodiesel 6.6-liter V8 generated 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque, paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. This setup allowed the Silverado 3500HD to tow up to 36,000 pounds in its optimal configuration and carry a payload of 7,442 pounds. The diesel engine's 10-speed transmission ensured optimal performance, making the Silverado feel lively despite its size. The truck's trailering capabilities were enhanced by features like a seven-pin connector and an advanced trailering system available on the LTZ trim.

The 2020 RAM 2500 offered versatility with three cab options and two bed lengths. The single cab provided the highest payload and seating for up to three, while the Crew Cab and Mega Cab configurations offered more space and luxury. The Mega Cab allowed rear passengers to recline and enjoy a private, comfortable ride. The RAM 2500's design included practical features like power running boards, a retractable tailgate step, and optional RamBox storage bins. The truck's rear air suspension could adjust the trailer hitch height, and the diesel models featured a countdown timer for cold starts and an analog gauge for Diesel Emissions Fluid levels.

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD was available in various configurations, including regular cab/long-bed, double cab/long-bed, and crew cab options. The crew cabs provided ample space with two rows of seating, offering plenty of headroom and legroom. The Silverado's design included integrated bed steps and additional step-ups along the side of the bed, making it easier to access the truck's large cargo area. These features highlighted the Silverado's focus on practicality and ease of use.

The 2020 RAM 2500 came standard with a 5-inch touchscreen, but the 8.4-inch Uconnect upgrade was highly recommended for its quick and intuitive interface. The optional 12-inch display was a standout feature, offering a large, user-friendly interface for navigation, settings, and camera views. The RAM 2500's infotainment system was complemented by a 360-degree camera system and dual rear-view cameras, enhancing visibility and safety.

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD featured a standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with higher trims offering an 8-inch screen and navigation. The system was user-friendly, with hard buttons and dials for easy operation. The Silverado's trailering features included backup camera guidelines and multiple camera angles, along with a trailering app for monitoring critical functions and providing a pre-trailering checklist.

The 2020 RAM 2500 was not rated by the NHTSA or IIHS, but its sibling, the RAM 1500, received high safety ratings, including a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. The RAM 2500 offered optional driver-assist features like blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control, which were praised for their effectiveness.

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD came standard with a backup camera and a full array of airbags. However, advanced safety features like forward collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring were optional. The Silverado also offered front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system, which were valuable additions given the truck's size.
