2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Reviews Summary

Pickup buyers tend to declare loyalty to one brand and stick with it, no matter what. Their choice in a truck becomes a part of who they are, a way of life, and a source of pride. When it comes to the redesigned 2019 Silverado, Chevy fans will no doubt be rightfully proud of their new truck, and not just because they’ve declared allegiance to the gold bowtie.

2020 RAM 2500 Reviews Summary

Heavy-duty trucks are all about headroom. It's packing a half-ton of timber in the bed without feeling a thing in the cab, or pulling 8,000 pounds and knowing there's another 8,000 or more in reserve. While it's acceptable to max out a light-duty truck on occasion, doing so puts excessive stress on the powertrain, brakes, and tires. HD trucks like the 2020 Ram 2500 are flashier and monstrous in size, but their posture is serious. If your life requires a truck like this, then I’d recommend you indulge in the Ram’s top-grade luxury, technology, and capability.

Look and feel
2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
8/10
2020 RAM 2500
8/10
The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 appeals to loyal Chevy truck fans with its modern, sleek exterior styling and range of versatile cab and bed configurations paired with six engine options. The 2020 Ram 2500 takes heavy-duty truck luxury, capability and technology to new levels with its upscale cabin materials, Cummins turbo diesel and high-tech amenities.
Performance
2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
6/10
2020 RAM 2500
9/10
CarGurus rates the 2019 Silverado 1500 at 6 out of 10 for performance while the 2020 Ram 2500 earns a 9 out of 10 rating. The 2019 Silverado offers a range of powertrains from an available 2.7L turbo 4-cylinder up to a brawny 6.2L V8 making 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, enabling 9,500 pounds max towing. Fuel economy disappoints, with real-world mpg falling far short of EPA estimates. Handling impresses with good steering and braking, although off-roading ability is limited. The 2020 Ram 2500 provides a choice between a gasoline 6.4L V8 generating 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft torque or a 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel inline 6-cylinder pumping out 370 horses and a mighty 850 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity reaches an incredible 19,780 pounds with the supple diesel paired to an 8-speed automatic. Fuel economy tops 19 mpg highway, which is excellent given this truck's extreme capabilities.
Form and function
2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
7/10
2020 RAM 2500
8/10
Experts score the 2019 Silverado 1500 a 7 out of 10 and the 2020 Ram 2500 an 8 out of 10 for utility and features. The 2019 Silverado delivers class-leading cargo volume with its innovative roll-formed steel bed, but it falls behind its full-size truck rivals when maximum towing and payload capacities are compared. Abundant in-cab storage space is offered, although power seat adjustment functionality disappoints even on upper trims. With three cab configurations and two bed lengths, the 2020 Ram 2500 adapts well to varying hauling duties. Opt for the enormous Mega Cab to transport people in first-class comfort. Towing and payload ratings meet or exceed those of competitors. Running boards and retractable steps ease access into this towering truck's cabin, which impresses with bountiful passenger room.
Technology
2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
9/10
2020 RAM 2500
10/10
The experts rated infotainment and advanced features a 9 out of 10 for the 2019 Silverado 1500 versus a perfect 10 out of 10 score for the 2020 Ram 2500. The 2019 Silverado gains Chevrolet's easy-to-use Infotainment 3 system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 4G Wi-Fi hotspot capability. A power tailgate, high-definition backup camera, and extensive driver-assistance features bolster technology appeal. However navigation is reserved only for premium trims. The 2020 Ram 2500 sets itself apart with an available stunning 12-inch Uconnect touchscreen flanked by redundant knobs and switches. Crisp graphics, customization, and immense display size exemplify modern tech executed to perfection for these oversized trucks. A second screen in the gauge cluster and 360-degree camera feeds push innovation further still.
Safety
2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
8/10
2020 RAM 2500
9/10
The 2019 Silverado 1500 safety rating stands at an 8 out of 10, with the 2020 Ram 2500 ranked marginally higher at 9 out of 10. Adding new active safety systems like automatic emergency braking boosts the 2019 Silverado 1500's security credentials. Protection does fall behind rivals that include driver assists by default instead of as options. Crash testing is not conducted on heavy duty models like the 2020 Ram 2500. However, its 1500 light duty platform performed excellently, earning top honors for occupant protection. Blind-spot monitoring and other driver aids really should be standard instead of extra-cost extras, deducting from an otherwise stellar rating.
