Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota bZ4X 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota bZ4X marks a major shift for Toyota, which is entering the battery-electric market with a small crossover aimed at the heart of the segment. It is Toyota’s first electric car for the United States market aimed at volume sales, and it arrives in a crowded field of small electric crossover SUVs. Toyota also keeps the lineup simple, with XLE and Limited trims and a choice of single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrains.
What stands out most about the 2023 Toyota bZ4X is the way it blends everyday comfort with strong road manners. The test-drive data highlights great handling and a comfortable ride, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Those strengths make it appealing to buyers who want an EV that feels easy to live with rather than overly complicated.
There are also some clear drawbacks to keep in mind. The design may be polarizing, the technology can be unintuitive, and the vehicle is described as poor value for money. Even so, the bZ4X is distinctive because it represents Toyota’s first serious push into a mainstream electric crossover, with a straightforward lineup and a focus on comfort and handling.

I think it’s overpriced for what it is. Interior is not appealing especially with the cloth dashboard and same pattern I’m on the seats. A bit difficult to get used to the knob for drive and reverse. It felt dated and not worth the price. If the car were $10,000 less than what was listed I may have been more interested in purchasing it.

I was impressed with the comfortable seats and the arrangement of actual push button controls on the steering wheel…I loved the glass roof even though it did not open…I also loved the ground clearance and the large wheels…My only issue was range (in general) that also would be greatly reduced when using heat or air….After reading that batteries should not be charged more than twice on the same day at a fast charging station to protect batteries…We need to be able to travel 640 miles when visiting family…

How much does the 2023 Toyota bZ4X cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,794 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,677 |
| Year-Round High | $24,889 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,853 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.26% |
Prices have softened 4.26% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 601 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota bZ4X earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 8/10.
Toyota positions this as a small electric crossover aimed at the heart of the segment, and the data backs up that everyday focus: it blends comfortable ride quality with strong road manners, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That makes it a sensible fit if you want an EV that feels easy to live with rather than overly complicated.
The trade-offs are real, though. The design may be polarizing, the technology can be unintuitive, and the value proposition is weak relative to the field.
With 33.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Toyota’s first mainstream U.S.-market EV is built around a straightforward lineup and a familiar brand approach to durability, which can be reassuring if you want a used EV that doesn’t feel experimental. The expert data also points to a comfortable, composed driving character rather than a highly stressed powertrain.
The performance notes suggest the single-motor and dual-motor setups are tuned more for everyday use and traction than for hard acceleration, which can be a good sign for long-term ownership. On the cost side, the battery warranty coverage helps reduce early ownership risk, and the included maintenance coverage can make the first stretch of ownership simpler.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the battery and charging system have been cared for properly, since EV ownership depends heavily on how the car was charged and maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota bZ4X?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on an EV where charging behavior and battery condition matter. Focus on overall condition, tire wear, and whether the car has been used mostly for home charging or frequent DC fast charging.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: XLE models ride on 18-inch wheels, while Limited models get 20-inch wheels and add more upscale equipment. The base setup is simpler, so you should check whether the features you want are standard or reserved for the higher trim.
- Powertrain: You can choose single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive. FWD models make 201 horsepower and 196 pound-feet of torque, while AWD models make 214 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque; AWD is more about traction than a big power jump.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, and Safe Exit Assist. A 360-degree camera is available on Limited.
- Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in over-the-air update capability, and a digital key function.
- Range & charging: EPA range is 252 miles for the base FWD XLE, 242 miles for the FWD Limited, 228 miles for the AWD XLE, and 222 miles for the AWD Limited. Usable battery capacity is 71.4 kilowatt-hours on FWD models and 72.8 kilowatt-hours on AWD models. Toyota says DC fast charging can reach 80% in 30 minutes, and FWD models can charge at 150 kilowatts while AWD models can charge at 100 kW.
- Battery health: Ask for battery state-of-health information if available, review charging habits, and confirm whether the car has mostly seen home charging or repeated fast charging. You should also check how much of the battery warranty remains so you know what protection is left.
Which 2023 Toyota bZ4X trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota bZ4X is offered in 2 trim levels: XLE and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XLE: This is the best-value choice if you want the core bZ4X experience without paying extra for the higher trim. You still get the standard EV hardware, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, the 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and the same comfortable, planted driving character that defines the model.
- Limited: This trim is the better pick if you want more equipment and a more upscale feel, including 20-inch wheels and the available 360-degree camera system. Choose it if you value added convenience and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, with the 360-degree camera reserved for Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota bZ4X?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 601 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.26% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 93.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,677, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X's resale value?
The current average of $23,794 sits slightly below last year's $24,853.
That softer pricing trend suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car is equipped relative to similar listings.
Because the bZ4X is still a relatively niche EV in a crowded segment, strong presentation matters. A clean history, good battery health, and desirable equipment can help you stand out when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X safe?
The 2023 bZ4X received top “Good” scores in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test categories, but the standard headlights’ “Poor” rating kept it from earning an IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, and it includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, and Safe Exit Assist. A 360-degree camera is available on the Limited trim.
The headlight result is the main caveat to keep in mind, since it affects the model’s overall safety recognition even though the crash performance itself is strong.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota bZ4X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.26% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s first mainstream U.S.-market EV brings a simple trim structure, strong handling, and comfortable road manners.
The bottom line: If you want the bZ4X’s comfort-first driving character and straightforward EV setup, the 2023 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, shop aggressively for a clean, well-equipped example near the low end of the range, since the market already reflects some softness.
