Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota bZ4X marks a major shift for Toyota, which is entering the battery-electric market with a small crossover aimed at the heart of the segment. It is Toyota’s first electric car for the United States market aimed at volume sales, and it arrives in a crowded field of small electric crossover SUVs. Toyota also keeps the lineup simple, with XLE and Limited trims and a choice of single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrains.
What stands out most about the 2023 Toyota bZ4X is the way it blends everyday comfort with strong road manners. The test-drive data highlights great handling and a comfortable ride, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Those strengths make it appealing to buyers who want an EV that feels easy to live with rather than overly complicated.
There are also some clear drawbacks to keep in mind. The design may be polarizing, the technology can be unintuitive, and the vehicle is described as poor value for money. Even so, the bZ4X is distinctive because it represents Toyota’s first serious push into a mainstream electric crossover, with a straightforward lineup and a focus on comfort and handling.

I think it’s overpriced for what it is. Interior is not appealing especially with the cloth dashboard and same pattern I’m on the seats. A bit difficult to get used to the knob for drive and reverse. It felt dated and not worth the price. If the car were $10,000 less than what was listed I may have been more interested in purchasing it.

I was impressed with the comfortable seats and the arrangement of actual push button controls on the steering wheel…I loved the glass roof even though it did not open…I also loved the ground clearance and the large wheels…My only issue was range (in general) that also would be greatly reduced when using heat or air….After reading that batteries should not be charged more than twice on the same day at a fast charging station to protect batteries…We need to be able to travel 640 miles when visiting family…

How much does the 2023 Toyota bZ4X cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,735 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,677 |
| Year-Round High | $24,889 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,777 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.21% |
Prices have softened 4.21% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 570 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota bZ4X earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 8/10.
Toyota positions this as its first mainstream U.S.-market electric crossover, and the setup is intentionally simple: you get XLE and Limited trims, plus single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive. That makes it appealing if you want an EV that feels easy to live with rather than overly complicated.
The trade-offs are clear too. The design may not be for everyone, the technology can feel unintuitive, and the value proposition is weak relative to the field. Even so, the bZ4X’s comfortable ride and strong road manners give it a more relaxed, everyday character than many rivals.
36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Toyota’s first serious battery-electric effort for the U.S. market is built around a straightforward lineup and familiar-brand engineering, which can be reassuring if you want a mainstream EV rather than something experimental. The expert notes also point to a solid, planted feel on the road and a comfortable driving experience, both of which matter for long-term livability.
The performance notes suggest the dual-motor setup is more about traction than outright speed, and the battery-and-charging setup is conventional for the segment. Standard warranty coverage includes battery protection for 8 years/100,000 miles, which is important for used-EV ownership.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the battery and charging behavior still match expectations as the vehicle ages.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota bZ4X?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on an EV where battery condition and charging performance matter. Focus on overall condition, charging equipment, and whether the car has been used mostly for home charging or frequent DC fast charging. If possible, ask for battery state-of-health information and review how much of the battery warranty remains.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: XLE models ride on 18-inch wheels, while Limited models get 20-inch wheels and a more upscale presentation. The Limited trim also adds available equipment such as a 360-degree camera system.
- Powertrain: FWD models use a single electric motor with 201 horsepower and 196 pound-feet of torque, while AWD models use dual motors with 214 hp and 248 lb-ft. AWD is more about traction than extra punch.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, and Safe Exit Assist.
- Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in over-the-air update capability, and a Qi wireless charger.
- Range & charging: FWD models are rated at 252 miles of range in base XLE form, while AWD models are rated at 228 miles in XLE form. The usable battery capacity is 71.4-kilowatt-hour for FWD models and 72.8-kWh for AWD models. Toyota says DC fast charging can reach 80% in 30 minutes, with FWD models charging at up to 150 kilowatts and AWD models at up to 100 kW.
- Battery health: Check battery state-of-health, confirm normal charging behavior, and make sure the remaining battery warranty still covers you for the years and miles you expect to keep the car.
Which 2023 Toyota bZ4X trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota bZ4X is offered in 2 trim levels: XLE and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XLE: This is the better-value choice if you want the core bZ4X experience without paying for extras. You still get the standard EV hardware, the full Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite, the 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the strongest range figure in the lineup in base FWD form.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the more upscale version and are willing to pay for it. It adds the higher-end trim presentation, 20-inch wheels, and available features such as the 360-degree camera system, but it also comes with a higher price and, in FWD form, slightly less range than the base XLE.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota bZ4X?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 570 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.21% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 92.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,677, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X's resale value?
The current average of $23,735 sits slightly below last year's $24,777.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may pressure future resale if prices keep easing. For a seller, the current trend means you should expect more competition from similarly priced listings and be realistic about how quickly your car may move.
The good news is that the model still has a meaningful floor in the market, especially when it’s clean, well-kept, and priced near the lower end of the range. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X safe?
The 2023 Toyota bZ4X earns top “Good” scores in all IIHS crash test categories, but its standard headlights received a “Poor” rating, which kept it from earning an IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, and it includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering, and Safe Exit Assist. A 360-degree camera system is available on the Limited trim.
The main caveat is the headlight result, since that weak spot is the reason the bZ4X missed out on an IIHS award despite strong crash performance elsewhere.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota bZ4X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.21% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s first mainstream U.S.-market EV effort brings a simple trim structure, strong road manners, and standard wireless smartphone integration.
The bottom line: The 2023 bZ4X makes sense if you want a comfortable, easy-to-live-with used EV and you find one priced well below the market average. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping carefully for the best deal and the cleanest history, since the market still offers enough inventory to be selective.
