CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Toyota Sienna
overall

Summary
With 1,126 currently listed for sale and an average price of $35,058.00, 30.0% of 2021 Toyota Siennas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota Sienna 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
72.7% of 2021 Sienna models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Sienna stands out because Toyota gave its minivan a major makeover for the year, adding new styling and a hybrid powertrain. It also marks the Sienna’s fourth generation of production since debuting as a 1997 model. For buyers who want a family hauler that emphasizes efficiency and comfort, that combination makes the 2021 Sienna especially distinctive.
Its biggest strengths are easy to understand: it is fuel-efficient, has a great ride quality, and is spacious. The hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain is standard equipment, which gives the Sienna a clear identity in a segment where practicality matters. It is also built on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, shared with the Highlander and other current Toyota models.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The stereo is lacking, and the styling is described as uninspired. Some drivers also mention concerns about acceleration, interior material quality, missing features like a spare tire, and limited connectivity tech options. Even so, the 2021 Toyota Sienna’s roomy cabin and strong gas mileage make it appealing to shoppers who value everyday usefulness over flash.

HUD, Gas mileage, Radar cruise with lane trace assist etc. makes it a great vehicle for long road trips. Wish the BSM indicators appear on the HUD and have more options displayed on the HUD as well. Also the Android Auto\Apple Car Play navigation is not projected into HUD. Wish that was included as well.

Drivers repeatedly praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling. The hybrid and AWD combination also comes through as a satisfying setup for road trips and everyday family use.
The trade-offs are familiar: some owners point to acceleration concerns, interior material quality, missing features like a spare tire, and limited connectivity tech options. That lines up with the Sienna’s use case as a practical family hauler that prioritizes comfort and efficiency over flash.
With a 28.1% good-or-great-deals share, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitively priced example.

Drivers describe it as dependable for family duty, with a reputation for being trouble-free enough to inspire confidence over the long haul. The hybrid setup is presented as proven, and the overall ownership experience centers on consistency, efficiency, and everyday usefulness.
Toyota’s hybrid system is described as a proven one, and the minivan’s efficiency-focused design supports a low-stress ownership experience. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the concept and more about finding a well-kept example with complete service history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
At 73.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, interior condition, and any signs of prior repair. Because this model is often bought for family duty, condition matters as much as mileage. It’s also smart to confirm that the equipment you want is actually present, since some convenience and tech features vary by trim.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE trim uses 17-inch wheels and a six-speaker stereo, while higher trims add larger wheels and more upscale equipment. The base trim also misses some convenience items that appear higher up the range.
- Powertrain: A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors make 243 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available, and the CVT is tuned more for smooth efficiency than quick throttle response.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, with full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is standard too.
- Infotainment: A nine-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and multiple USB ports. Wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: Front-wheel-drive models are rated at 36 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined; all-wheel-drive models are rated at 35 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 35 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Sienna is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the value entry point if you want the standard hybrid powertrain, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a nine-inch touchscreen, and the basics without stretching the budget. It’s the trim to start with if you care most about efficiency and family utility.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more convenience and comfort features while staying below the upper luxury-oriented grades. It also unlocks more available tech and family-friendly options.
- XSE: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a sportier-feeling presentation without moving all the way to the top of the range. It sits above the mainstream trims and adds more visual flair.
- Limited: This is the upscale comfort pick, with more premium tech and available equipment that make long family trips easier. It suits you if you want a more fully loaded minivan.
- Platinum: This is the top-end choice if you want the most advanced tech and the richest feature set in the lineup. It’s the trim for buyers who want the most complete version of the Sienna.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and the Star Safety System are standard across all trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,151 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,967.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $35,031 sits slightly below last year's $36,227.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means your upside will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than broad market appreciation.
Because the Sienna has strong owner satisfaction and a clear family-use identity, demand should remain steady among shoppers who value efficiency and space. Well-kept examples are likely to hold attention better than neglected ones.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2021 Sienna comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, including full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Star Safety System is standard as well, along with 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder system, TPMS, and an inflator kit. Buyers can still opt for a spare tire, and the spare tire location has been moved for better safety and convenience.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s minivan gets a major makeover here, with a standard hybrid powertrain and a more efficient identity.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $26,816, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $35,031 average.
- It emphasizes traditional minivan practicality and uniquely offers all-wheel drive.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $37,483, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $35,031 average.
- It carries the redesigned hybrid formula forward and adds a Woodland trim for a more adventurous look.
The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive version of this generation’s Sienna, the 2021 is the key year because it introduces the hybrid-only formula and the redesign. If price matters most, the 2020 can save you money, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the same core package and are willing to pay more for a newer model year.
