Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Sienna stands out because Toyota gave its minivan a major makeover for the year, adding new styling and a hybrid powertrain. It also marks the Sienna’s fourth generation of production since debuting as a 1997 model. For buyers who want a family hauler that emphasizes efficiency and comfort, that combination makes the 2021 Sienna especially distinctive.
Its biggest strengths are easy to understand: it is fuel-efficient, has a great ride quality, and is spacious. The hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain is standard equipment, which gives the Sienna a clear identity in a segment where practicality matters. It is also built on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, shared with the Highlander and other current Toyota models.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The stereo is lacking, and the styling is described as uninspired. Some drivers also mention concerns about acceleration, interior material quality, missing features like a spare tire, and limited connectivity tech options. Even so, the 2021 Toyota Sienna’s roomy cabin and strong gas mileage make it appealing to shoppers who value everyday usefulness over flash.

HUD, Gas mileage, Radar cruise with lane trace assist etc. makes it a great vehicle for long road trips. Wish the BSM indicators appear on the HUD and have more options displayed on the HUD as well. Also the Android Auto\Apple Car Play navigation is not projected into HUD. Wish that was included as well.

Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Generally — 4.33/5 from owners and 8.33/10 from our experts. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling. Many also like the AWD and hybrid combination for road trips and everyday family use. The main trade-offs are acceleration and interior material quality, along with some complaints about missing connectivity features.
That lines up with the Sienna’s use case: you’re looking at a family hauler that prioritizes efficiency and comfort over flash. With 31.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as dependable for family duty, with strong praise for the hybrid setup, roomy cabin, and smooth day-to-day operation. The hybrid powertrain is presented as a proven combination, and the overall ownership experience appears to be one you can count on for regular use.
Toyota’s warranty coverage also helps support confidence in ownership. For used buyers, the bigger risk is less about the drivetrain concept and more about finding a well-kept example with complete service history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
At 73.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior bodywork or interior wear. Because this is a family-focused vehicle, make sure the cabin features and seating configuration match how you’ll actually use it.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE trim is the most basic version, with a six-speaker stereo and fewer convenience features than higher grades. Higher trims add more comfort, tech, and luxury touches, while the base setup still includes the core safety suite.
- Powertrain: A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors make 243 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available, and the CVT helps efficiency but can dull throttle response.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is standard too.
- Infotainment: A nine-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and Bluetooth. Wireless phone integration is not mentioned here, and the available tech upgrades expand with trim.
- Fuel efficiency: Front-wheel-drive models are rated at 36 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined. All-wheel-drive models are rated at 35 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 35 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Sienna is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: LE gives you the essentials, but it’s the least equipped version and misses some of the comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: XLE is the best value for many shoppers because it adds meaningful convenience and tech without jumping all the way to luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: Platinum is the most upscale choice, with the richest tech and comfort content, including the most advanced display and driver-facing features.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across all trims, so you don’t need to move up the ladder to get the core driver-assistance package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep bargains everywhere.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,132 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.36% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,965.61, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $35,144 sits slightly below last year's $36,367.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. For a seller, the upside is that the Sienna’s strong family appeal and hybrid efficiency should keep demand healthy. Well-kept examples with good equipment and clean history should remain easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna safe?
It earns 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is standard as well, along with 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder, and LATCH connectors for child seats.
One practical note: the 2021 model-year crash-test ratings were not yet released in the source material. That means you should lean more heavily on the standard safety equipment and the vehicle’s condition when evaluating a used example.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s redesign brings a standard hybrid powertrain and a major efficiency-focused makeover.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $26,890, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $35,144 average.
- It emphasizes practicality and all-wheel drive for buyers who want a traditional minivan setup.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $37,497, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $35,144 average.
- It carries the redesigned hybrid formula forward and adds a more adventurous Woodland trim.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned Sienna with standard hybrid efficiency, the 2021 is the main target. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2020 is the value play. If you want the newer model-year carryover and don’t mind paying more, the 2022 is worth a look.
