The Audi Q7 was the first-ever SUV from the German automaker when it hit the US market in 2007. Still in its second generation, the Q7 got a substantial refresh for the 2020 model year. Its design is largely unchanged for 2021, but Audi did add a few extra goodies to the lineup this year. The 2021 Q7 is available in three trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. These are further segmented by engine choice. Q7 models with the “45” designation have the turbo-charged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This powertrain makes 248 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a 3.0-liter mild-hybrid V6 which makes 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque—models with the larger engine have “55” in the title. Premium and Premium Plus trims are offered in both 45 and 55 variants, while Prestige can only be had with the V6. Audi’s well-known Quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system is standard on all Q7s. The Q7 is Audi’s three-row SUV, but if you intend to spend any length of time in it, you will likely find it more suitable for four or five than for seven occupants. If you insist on using that third row, you’ll have less than 15 cubic feet of cargo volume to work with. But lower the power-folding rearmost seats, and space opens up significantly. You can bump it up to 35.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row folded down and over 69 cubic feet with the second row flat as well. A 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard on all 2021 Q7s, along with an 8.6-inch screen that hosts climate controls and most of the vehicle’s systems and settings. Audi’s fully digital Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster is also standard on all Q7s, as are 4G LTE Wi-Fi and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. For 2021, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert becomes standard. The Convenience package, which is available on Premium models and standard on Premium Plus, gains a heated steering wheel and a 360-degree camera. For Premium Plus models, features formerly offered in the Cold Weather, Warm Weather, and Driver Assistance packages are now available in a single Executive package. The Prestige trim comes standard with heated rear seats for 2021, as well as leather-wrapped armrests and center console. The 2021 Audi Q7 earned five out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the side crash test and four in the rollover test. It also earned the highest crash-test rating of “Good” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but a “Poor” for headlights due to excessive glare. Starting price for the 2021 Audi Q7 is $54,950 for the Premium 45. Premium Plus 45 starts at $57,200, Premium 55 at $60,800, Premium Plus 55 at $63,800, and the range-topping Prestige 55 model starts at $72,000.
