overall

Summary
With 171 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $36,120.00, 28.1% of 2020 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota 4Runner 4.85 / 5 stars.
100.0% of 2020 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is known for its ruggedness, reliability, and off-road capability, making it a popular choice for those who prioritize durability.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is a standout in the SUV market due to its robust off-road capabilities and rugged design. Built on a truck chassis, it features a powerful 4.0-liter V6 engine that delivers 270 horsepower, making it well-suited for tackling challenging terrains. The 4Runner's body-on-frame construction enhances its durability, allowing it to withstand the rigors of off-road driving. While it may not offer the most modern interior features compared to competitors, it compensates with a high seating position and excellent visibility. The addition of Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) for 2020 brings advanced safety features, enhancing its appeal to families and adventure seekers alike. However, potential buyers should be aware of its less-than-ideal fuel economy and the relatively high price point, which may not offer the best value for those who do not require its off-road prowess.

Love the color and the ability to do anything in this bad boy. Drives off road super smooth and easy, drives on paced road as smooth as the SR5. This is the perfect vehicle.

The perfect dinosaur for me! I chose this make and model specifically for its older tech and build quality. Is it fast, no. Does it sip gas, nope. Does it feel solid, yes. This is my second one. The first is still running great at 20 years old. My only gripe is the type of OEM step bars. Easy to get in, but not the best for getting out of the vehicle. They will be swapped. Problem solved. This is a popular platform but it isn't the right vehicle for everyone. If you are considering a 4Runner, watch the Care Care Nut's review of the 5th gen 4Runners FIRST. Know what you are buying. I have had a Lexus and 2 different 4 Runners. These are the best vehicles I have ever owned and that’s comparing them to Volvo, Dodge, Jeep, and BMW. The only thing I have a problem with is gas mileage but that’s what you get when you have 4 wheel drive. It would be nice if it had the push button lift for the tail gate but no big deal. They are awesome vehicles. I am on my 4th Toyota/Lexus brand.

This 2020 4 Runner is a great choice. I have a very active lifestyle. I surf, snowboard, cycle and take my two dogs almost everywhere I go. So this vehicle is perfect for what I need. The SR5 Premium model has just enough nice features that it feels like your driving a luxury car minus the high price tag. If you are looking for a true goat of a truck I recommend this vehicle.

How much does the 2020 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $35,542 |
| Year-Round Low | $33,564.67 |
| Year-Round High | $36,874.74 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $36,875 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.62% |
Prices have softened 3.62% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,370 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare options.
If you find a listing below $33,564.67, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and they also highlight its comfort and off-road capability. The 4Runner’s durable, body-on-frame setup and strong utility fit well if you want a vehicle that feels built for hard use rather than polished commuting.
The trade-offs are clear: it can feel dated inside, and it gives up modern-feeling refinement and convenience compared with newer rivals. In market terms, 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you can still shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as rugged, reliable, and a vehicle they can count on, with value retention also coming up repeatedly in feedback. The expert evaluation reinforces that dependability angle by pointing to the engine’s longevity and the 4Runner’s tough body-on-frame construction.
Toyota also adds a practical ownership perk with Toyota Safety Sense P, which helps modernize the truck’s everyday usability. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that durability does not erase age-related wear, especially if the vehicle has seen heavy off-road use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
At 70% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the 4Runner has been used off-road or towed with regularly. Focus on signs of underbody wear, suspension abuse, and interior condition, since those are the kinds of issues that can matter most on a rugged SUV.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come standard with cloth, while SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium add SofTex; the Limited leans more toward comfort with leather upholstery.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic. It makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, and the setup is tuned more for durability and off-road use than smooth efficiency.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The system is standard, and the 4Runner also comes with eight airbags.
- Infotainment: The cabin gets an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and subscription services are also included, while higher trims add features like a JBL stereo and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined, and real-world testing returned 17.7 mpg. The 4Runner is not a fuel-sipping SUV.
Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: SR5 gives you the core 4Runner experience, but it stays relatively basic with cloth upholstery and fewer comfort-focused touches than the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: SR5 Premium is the best value pick if you want a more livable cabin, since it adds SofTex and keeps the 4Runner’s core capability intact.
- Premium/top trim: Limited is the most comfort-oriented choice, with leather upholstery and a more upscale feel, though it still carries the 4Runner’s rugged character.
- Off-road trim: TRD Pro is the most specialized choice, but it makes the most sense if you truly plan to use the 4Runner’s trail hardware.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,370 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.62% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,564.67, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $35,542 sits slightly below last year's $36,875.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from a year ago. If you plan to sell later, the 4Runner’s strong reputation for durability and its loyal buyer base should help support demand.
Because this model year still attracts shoppers who want rugged utility, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than more ordinary SUVs. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2020 4Runner earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA and three-star ratings in rollover testing. IIHS gave it Good scores in all crash tests except the small overlap front: driver-side test, where it scored Marginal.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 4Runner also comes with eight standard airbags.
The main caveat is the Marginal IIHS result and the SUV’s relatively high center of gravity, which make its safety profile less reassuring than the rest of its equipment list might suggest.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota adds Toyota Safety Sense P and an updated 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $32,275, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $35,542 average.
- It keeps the same rugged off-road focus with a simpler, more straightforward setup.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,511, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $35,542 average.
- It builds on the same formula with added appeal for reliability-minded shoppers.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, updated tech, and the classic 4Runner formula, the 2020 is the right target. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better value play; if you want to spend more for a slightly newer example, the 2021 is the natural step up.
