CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Honda Pilot
overall

Summary
With 213 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $23,731.00, 24.4% of 2020 Honda Pilots for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Honda Pilot 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
83.6% of 2020 Pilot models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Pilot is a versatile, comfortable three-row SUV with a strong practical appeal. It offers tons of cargo space, an adult-friendly third row, and an impressive list of standard safety features, which helps explain why it remains attractive to shoppers who want family-friendly utility in a mainstream package. Its powerful engine is another plus, and owners also praise its performance, comfort, fuel efficiency, spacious interior, and responsive handling.
Even so, the Pilot no longer stands out from the competition the way it once did. Honda’s driver controls and in-car tech are its biggest shortcomings, and the interior materials feel cheap. Some owners also note that it is not the best choice for towing and that city fuel consumption can be higher than in other vehicles, so buyers should weigh its strengths in space and comfort against those limitations.

Truly next level, crazy fast and responsive SUV for what it is, did not expect to be so agile and fast. Throttle response and braking are unbelievable again, for something this big. Corners amazing, all while getting great gas mileage. This is the Black Edition, it’s better than anything else in its class, period.

Perfect size SUV. I love everything about it. The hands free options are amazing. The fact that you dont have a key switch, was a little getting use too. Drives smoothly. Great on gas. Very comfortable interior.

Great value with awesome upgrades! Wish it had the right rear view mirror camera like our 2015 Honda Accord. Much better bang for my buck in gas mpg than the other vehicles we considered like the Lexus 460 and Toyota Highlander.

2020 Honda Pilot Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2020 Honda Pilot prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2020 Honda Pilot cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,701 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,506.19 |
| Year-Round High | $24,606.50 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,582 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.65% |
Prices have softened 7.65% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,314 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $22,506.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Honda Pilot earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its performance, comfort, fuel efficiency, spacious interior, and responsive handling. The expert review also highlights its tons of cargo space and adult-friendly third row, which makes it a strong fit if you want family-friendly utility in a mainstream three-row SUV.
The trade-offs are clear: Honda’s driver controls and in-car tech are the biggest shortcomings, and the interior materials feel cheap. In practical terms, that means you should value the Pilot most if space, comfort, and everyday usability matter more to you than a polished cabin interface.
With 33.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on its performance, comfort, fuel efficiency, and spacious interior. That kind of feedback usually matters most when you want a used SUV you can count on for regular family duty.
The expert review also describes the Pilot as a refined, comfortable vehicle built for easy commutes and relaxing road trips, which supports the idea that it should be a steady long-term companion. If you’re buying used, the main ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Pilot?
At 69.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on condition, prior damage, and how well the cabin and controls have held up, since the Pilot’s value depends heavily on getting a clean, well-maintained example.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, push-button start, power locks, and power windows with a one-touch driver’s window. The EX adds remote start, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED fog lights, Smart Entry, tri-zone climate control, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats.
- Powertrain: A 3.5-liter V6 powers every trim and makes 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. LX, EX, and EX-L trims use a 6-speed automatic, while Touring, Elite, and Black Edition models get a 9-speed automatic that provides more refined acceleration and should help fuel economy.
- Safety package: HondaSensing is standard and includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Front and side-impact airbags, child-seat anchors, Vehicle Stability Assist, and traction control are also standard, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is optional.
- Infotainment: The LX uses a 5-inch color LCD screen with Bluetooth and a USB port. All other trims get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Cabin Control Remote Capability.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient setup is FWD with the 9-speed automatic at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined. AWD with the 9-speed returns 19 mpg city, 27 highway, 22 combined. The 6-speed FWD setup returns 19 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined, while the 6-speed AWD setup returns 18 mpg city, 26 highway, 21 combined.
Which 2020 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Pilot is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, Elite, and Black Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LX gives you the essentials, but it lacks the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, SiriusXM, and Cabin Control Remote Capability that appear on higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: The EX is the best value pick because it adds remote start, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED fog lights, Smart Entry, tri-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
- Premium/top trim: The Elite adds a panoramic sunroof, power-folding mirrors with integrated turn signals, a heated steering wheel, and heated and ventilated front seats, while the Black Edition layers on unique styling and nearly the same equipment.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims is positioned as an off-road-focused choice for typical daily drivers.
HondaSensing is standard across the lineup, so you’re not forced into a higher trim just to get the core safety suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Pilot?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,314 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.65% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,506.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Pilot's resale value?
The current average of $22,701 sits slightly below last year's $24,582.
That softer pricing suggests the Pilot has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later.
The market also appears reasonably active, which matters when you eventually go to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot safe?
The Honda Pilot earns a five-star overall crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It also earns the best crash test score of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Thanks to Honda Sensing, the Pilot also earns the best score of Superior in IIHS crash prevention technology evaluation.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
HondaSensing is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Front and side-impact airbags, child-seat anchors, Vehicle Stability Assist, and traction control are also standard.
If you want extra hardware, front and rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert are optional. That means the core safety package is strong even on lower trims, but some convenience-oriented safety features still require an upgrade or option selection.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Prices have softened 7.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for its standard safety features and family-friendly space.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,539, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $22,701 average.
- It adds a more polished overall feel and simpler daily livability.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because pricing has eased and the Pilot still delivers strong space, comfort, and safety. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model-year experience, the 2021 is the cleaner upgrade path; if price matters most, the 2020 deserves your first look.
