CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford Mustang
overall

Summary
With 304 currently listed for sale near Chicago, IL and an average price of $24,696.00, 28.9% of 2020 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Mustang 4.73 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
89.1% of 2020 Mustang models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Mustang stands out because it remains one of the most recognizable American pony cars at a moment when Ford is shifting away from cars and toward trucks, SUVs, and electrification. That gives this Mustang a sense of being both a classic and a transition point, and the source material frames it as especially relevant even as the company’s lineup changes around it. It is also described as a building block for Ford’s future, which adds to its significance beyond simple nostalgia.
What makes the 2020 Ford Mustang appealing is the mix of performance character and everyday value. The car offers multiple powertrain options, is fun to drive, and is presented as an excellent value for money. The nostalgic appeal is reinforced by the Mustang Bullitt special edition, which is highlighted as an especially fitting expression of the nameplate’s design and performance. At the same time, buyers should be aware of its compromises: it does not offer much cargo space, and advanced safety features are not standard.

I put 16000 miles on a new 2020 Mustang. Absolutely no issues. It also got great gas mileage. I averaged 29.6 mpg for the whole time I owned the car. I had the manual which was a little stiff when I first got it but worked in great.

The 2020 Ford Mustang EcoBoost HPP: A Balanced Masterpiece The 2020 Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance Package (HPP) represents a unique blend of spirited performance, efficiency, and everyday practicality. While the Mustang name traditionally evokes the rumble of a V8, this EcoBoost variant proves that turbocharged four-cylinder power can deliver just as much excitement with a modern twist. Under the hood lies a 2.3L turbocharged engine generating an impressive 330 horsepower, enabling a 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds. This level of performance, paired with MagneRide suspension and a Torsen limited-slip differential, gives the EcoBoost HPP dynamic handling characteristics that shine on both the open road and twisty mountain passes. What truly sets this Mustang apart is its balance of performance and fuel efficiency. Rated at 20-27 MPG, it offers a range of approximately 450 miles per tank, making it an excellent choice for road trips. This was evident during a recent drive from Oregon to Colorado, where the EcoBoost excelled at tackling diverse terrains while offering a smooth and comfortable ride. Beyond its performance, the EcoBoost HPP proves to be a stylish and versatile companion. Its sleek design, aggressive stance, and advanced technology make it a car that commands attention. Whether cruising through fall foliage or tearing up the quarter-mile track, this Mustang excels in every scenario. For enthusiasts seeking a thrilling, efficient, and modern take on the Mustang legacy, the EcoBoost HPP is a masterpiece.

How much does the 2020 Ford Mustang cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,679 |
| Year-Round Low | $25,009.89 |
| Year-Round High | $28,001.01 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,997 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.71% |
Prices have softened 4.71% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 2,227 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $25,009.89, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Ford Mustang earns a 4.73/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its power, fun driving experience, and stylish looks, and many also like the comfort of the seats and the range of engine choices. The expert review reinforces that appeal by framing the car as a nostalgic, performance-focused Mustang with strong value for the money.
The trade-offs are clear: cargo space is limited, and some buyers may find the price a bit high. The overview also points to its role as a transition-point model, which makes it especially appealing if you want a classic pony-car feel while Ford’s lineup is changing around it.
With 26.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on performance that owners feel good about living with over time. The expert review also emphasizes that the Mustang’s character is built around a durable, enthusiast-friendly driving experience rather than novelty.
The review notes that the Bullitt’s six-speed manual and rev-matching setup are part of a package designed for engaged driving, while the broader Mustang lineup includes multiple powertrain choices. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about choosing a well-kept example that hasn’t been abused.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Mustang?
At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Focus on body condition, tire wear, brake condition, and signs of track use or poor repair work. Because this model can be bought for performance, condition matters as much as mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Bullitt stands out with Dark Highland Green paint, subtle chrome accents, retro 19-inch wheels, unique green stitching, a white cue-ball shifter knob, and a serialized plaque, while the review also notes that some cheap plastic interior pieces are harder to accept at its price.
- Powertrain: The lineup spans a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder, a 5.0-liter V8, and higher-output V8 variants, with manual, automatic, and dual-clutch transmissions depending on model.
- Safety package: The standard setup includes recalibrated antilock braking, traction control, stability control, a reversing camera, MyKey, and 911 Assist; blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are part of the optional Electronics Package.
- Infotainment: The car uses a 12-inch digital instrumentation cluster and Sync 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and available 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio.
- Fuel efficiency: The Bullitt returns 14/23/17 mpg, while the EcoBoost Mustang delivers 21/31/25 mpg and the Shelby GT500 returns 12/18/14 mpg.
Which 2020 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Mustang is offered in 1 trim level: Bullitt.
Here's the short version:
The Bullitt is the standout choice if you want the most character-rich version of this model year, with its special-edition styling, stronger V8 output, and manual-only setup. It suits you best if you value nostalgia, sound, and driver involvement more than everyday practicality. The expert review also makes clear that it sits in the middle of the lineup on price and performance, which helps explain its appeal as the enthusiast’s sweet spot.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare carefully.
- Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,227 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.71% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,009.89, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $26,679 sits slightly below last year's $27,997.
That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also suggests future sellers may not see rapid appreciation from this model year alone. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you give yourself a better chance of holding value when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Mustang safe?
It gets Good ratings from the IIHS in most crashworthiness tests, with an Acceptable rating for driver protection in a small overlap frontal-impact collision. In NHTSA testing, it earns five-star ratings in every test, including rollover resistance.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety setup includes antilock braking, traction control, stability control, a reversing camera, MyKey, and 911 Assist. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are available through the optional Electronics Package, so you should not assume those features are included on every used example.
The main caveat is that the car is light on advanced driver-assistance tech overall, so you should not expect the kind of safety suite you might find in a newer mainstream car.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.71% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out as a nostalgic transition-point Mustang with Bullitt-specific styling and strong performance value.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $31,565, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $26,679 average.
- It adds the Mach 1 trim, giving you a broader performance-focused lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the better value and are drawn to the Bullitt’s special-edition character, the 2020 is the smarter buy. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model year with an expanded trim lineup, the 2021 is the better path for shoppers who want more choice.
