CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Ford Mustang
overall

Summary
With 280 currently listed for sale near Chicago, IL and an average price of $22,414, 16.1% of 2017 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford Mustang 4.42 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Mustang stands out because it combines the Mustang’s long-running performance heritage with a broad range of body styles and engines. It is part of the sixth generation, which was revealed in late 2013 and began production in the summer of 2014 for the 2015 model year. That redesign brought a sleeker, smoother look, kept the coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, and added a new electric system for opening and closing the convertible top. It also marked the first time Ford produced and marketed the Mustang for a global audience, and it was the first Mustang to feature Ford’s EcoBoost engine lineup.
For 2017, the Mustang’s appeal comes from its rear-wheel-drive layout and wide engine spread. Base cars use Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while other available engines include a 3.7-liter V6, the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-liter V8. Transmission choices include two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That variety helps explain why the Mustang remains attractive to buyers who want a car that can be tailored toward everyday use or more serious performance.
There are also some drawbacks to keep in mind. Models with the EcoBoost engine are known for problems with oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage. The Mustang also has a small rear seat, which limits practicality. Even so, the 2017 Ford Mustang remains distinctive for offering iconic styling, strong performance potential, and a wide range of configurations in a single, recognizable package.

Car had nice features and low mileage. The color and wheels weren't my favorite, but that's a personal preference. The price seemed a bit high (I see now they just increased it!), but a nice car overall.

The blower motor needs replacing. The check engine light was on. Felt like it was misfiring when you punch it. Last oil change sticker read last year. Afraid of deeper engine issues.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,603 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,070 |
| Year-Round High | $22,436 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,407 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.58% |

There are 1,769 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2017 Ford Mustang a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Ford Mustang earns a 4.42/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, fun driving experience, and stylish design, and many also like the range of engine choices, especially the GT and EcoBoost models. If you want a car that can lean toward everyday use or more serious performance, the Mustang’s broad configuration spread fits that role well. With 29.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.42/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time, especially when it comes to performance and overall enjoyment. The strongest reliability takeaway is that satisfied owners tend to keep recommending it, which usually reflects a car people feel they can count on. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure you avoid examples with known mechanical or maintenance issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Mustang?
At 56.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with accident records. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on the engine, transmission, and any signs of uneven wear or deferred maintenance. Because condition varies meaningfully across listings, focus on service history and overall mechanical health rather than just the asking price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Mustang?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,769 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,070, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $21,603 sits slightly below last year's $22,407.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and trim appeal than on broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples should still hold attention, but you may want to be realistic about how quickly prices can move if the car has visible wear or a less desirable history.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.42/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.42/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $19,475, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $21,603 average.
- It adds heritage touches and modern convenience.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $22,690, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $21,603 average.
- It feels more refined and more performance-focused.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the best all-around pick if you want strong owner satisfaction, a broad range of choices, and softer pricing than a year ago. If your priority is saving money, the 2016 is the better value path; if you want a newer-feeling Mustang and can stretch your budget, the 2018 is the more polished alternative.
