Why it stands out
With standard all-wheel drive and affordable tech, the all-new 2017 Subaru Impreza stands out as a smart choice for buyers who want a sedan or hatchback instead of a crossover. It is one of the few options in that space, and its appeal comes from being affordable, safe, and practical.
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is also described as a great car, with strong owner loyalty around the Subaru brand suggesting it often appeals to repeat buyers. Its main drawback is that it is not as refined as it could be, but for shoppers who value all-wheel drive and everyday usefulness, that tradeoff may be easy to accept.

My wife and I were both civic owners for 13+ years each. She got a Crosstrek a few years back, which has been really good to us so far. So when my civic started overstaying its welcome I decided to include subaru in my search. Also test drove a honda civic and toyota corolla. While the Subaru doest exactly have the most potent acceleration- slowest of this group - it is the most fun to drive, in my opinion. The sport trim has a differently-tuned suspension and a tighter steering ratio. Combine these features with the all wheel drive and what you get is a car that you just want to drive. Subaru also got their act together with the interior. The visibility on the subaru is great (corolla is good too). However, the civics rear visibility was lacking because of the cars aggressively sloped rear end. Plus, the subaru just feels way more solidly built than the corolla or civic.

Its hard to see the oil pressure and the engine status of the car. This may be obvious to the car computer. But this is a user experience.

| Current Average Price | $12,466 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,994 |
| Year-Round High | $12,941 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,882 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.23% |

There are 848 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Subaru Impreza earns a 4.33/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
The overview frames it as a smart choice if you want a sedan or hatchback instead of a crossover, especially because it combines affordability, safety, and practicality with standard all-wheel drive. The expert review also emphasizes that it is one of the few cars in this space that delivers that mix, even if it is not as refined as some rivals.
29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview points to strong owner loyalty around the Subaru brand, and the expert review reinforces that this model is built around practical, everyday use rather than flash. Its standard all-wheel drive and affordable active safety setup also support the sense that it is engineered for dependable daily ownership.
The powertrain is straightforward, with a single 2-liter, 152-hp, 4-cylinder boxer engine and a CVT, which keeps the mechanical formula simple. For used buyers, that simplicity can be a plus, but long-term ownership risk still depends on how well the car was maintained and whether the CVT and all-wheel-drive system were cared for properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, and how the car drives at low and highway speeds so you can catch issues that may not show up in photos.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: In 2.0i trim, the Impreza starts with a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control. Premium adds an automatic transmission, while Sport adds minor performance-oriented touches, and Limited can be ordered with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses Subaru’s 2-liter, 152-hp, 4-cylinder boxer engine, paired with a CVT. The Sport adds torque vectoring, and the model does not offer a turbo engine.
- Safety package: EyeSight uses two color cameras mounted on the windshield and can alert you if you stray from your lane, automatically brake in an emergency, and adjust cruise control to follow traffic. On Premium, EyeSight adds $1,395 and is bundled with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
- Infotainment: Every 2017 Impreza comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the touchscreen supports music, podcasts, and navigation. The Premium trim is where EyeSight becomes available.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT helps the Impreza achieve 38 mpg highway and 28 mpg city.
Which 2017 Subaru Impreza trim should I buy?
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.0i, Premium, Sport, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.0i: This is the value-focused starting point if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the most basic equipment, including the 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, manual climate control, and a 4-speaker sound system.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the automatic transmission and opens the door to more options, including EyeSight with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
- Sport: Choose this if you want the trim with torque vectoring and an optional stick shift, along with a few minor performance-oriented touches.
- Limited: Pick this if you want the most upscale version, since it can be ordered with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment.
EyeSight is available on the Premium trim and adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage but still need to move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 848 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,994, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Impreza's resale value?
The current average of $12,466 sits slightly below last year's $12,882.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that a well-kept example should still hold appeal because the model’s practical all-wheel-drive setup and affordability remain central to its value story.
Because the year-over-year change is negative, you should expect resale to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than broad market momentum. Clean history and strong maintenance records will matter more if you want to protect value later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza safe?
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is a Top Safety Pick Plus from IIHS and earns a five-star safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two windshield-mounted cameras to provide lane-departure alerts, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. On Premium, it also comes with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
One caveat is that the system’s cruise-control behavior can be awkward when traffic stops, since it turns off after the car remains stopped for more than 3 seconds and the car can begin to roll forward if you are not already on the brake.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It stands out as one of the few sedan-or-hatchback choices with standard all-wheel drive, affordable tech, and a practical, safety-focused setup.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the right pick if you want standard all-wheel drive, strong safety credentials, and a practical compact car that is still relatively affordable. If you are especially price-sensitive, focus on the best-maintained examples and be ready to move quickly when you find one with a clean history and a price near the low end of the range.
