Why it stands out
With standard all-wheel drive and affordable tech, the all-new 2017 Subaru Impreza stands out as a smart choice for buyers who want a sedan or hatchback instead of a crossover. It is one of the few options in that space, and its appeal comes from being affordable, safe, and practical.
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is also described as a great car, with strong owner loyalty around the Subaru brand suggesting it often appeals to repeat buyers. Its main drawback is that it is not as refined as it could be, but for shoppers who value all-wheel drive and everyday usefulness, that tradeoff may be easy to accept.

My wife and I were both civic owners for 13+ years each. She got a Crosstrek a few years back, which has been really good to us so far. So when my civic started overstaying its welcome I decided to include subaru in my search. Also test drove a honda civic and toyota corolla. While the Subaru doest exactly have the most potent acceleration- slowest of this group - it is the most fun to drive, in my opinion. The sport trim has a differently-tuned suspension and a tighter steering ratio. Combine these features with the all wheel drive and what you get is a car that you just want to drive. Subaru also got their act together with the interior. The visibility on the subaru is great (corolla is good too). However, the civics rear visibility was lacking because of the cars aggressively sloped rear end. Plus, the subaru just feels way more solidly built than the corolla or civic.

Its hard to see the oil pressure and the engine status of the car. This may be obvious to the car computer. But this is a user experience.

Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Subaru Impreza earns a 4.33/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, which fits its role as an affordable, practical sedan or hatchback with standard all-wheel drive. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
The overview and expert evaluation both point to a car that is especially appealing if you want all-wheel drive without moving to a crossover. It is also positioned as affordable and safe, with everyday usefulness as a major strength, though refinement is not its strongest trait.
Good and great deals percentage: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview suggests the Impreza’s appeal is rooted in practicality, affordability, and strong brand loyalty, while the expert evaluation reinforces that it is a sensible choice for buyers who want a dependable daily driver with standard all-wheel drive. The performance notes also point to a drivetrain that is tuned for commuting rather than excitement, which usually aligns with straightforward ownership expectations.
The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is finding a car that has been treated well, since the model’s value depends heavily on condition and maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
At 58.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment and driving aids work as expected. Because this model is meant to be practical and affordable, a clean, well-kept example is usually the one worth paying for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: In 2.0i trim, you get a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control, while Premium adds an automatic transmission and more options. Sport adds a few minor performance-oriented touches, and Limited can be ordered with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment. The base trim is the most stripped-down, so you should pay close attention to whether its equipment level fits your needs.
- Powertrain: The only engine choice is Subaru’s 2-liter, 152-hp, 4-cylinder boxer engine, paired with a continuously variable transmission. The Sport trim adds torque vectoring and offers an optional stick shift. The engine is described as compact and low-vibration, but it can feel underpowered on highway on-ramps and uphill.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two color cameras mounted on the windshield. It can alert you if you stray from your lane, automatically brake in an emergency, and adjust cruise control to follow the car ahead. On the Premium trim, it adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
- Infotainment: Every 2017 Impreza comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the touchscreen gives you access to music, podcasts, and navigation. The Limited trim can be ordered with upgraded infotainment.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT helps the Impreza get fuel economy as good as 38 mpg highway and 28 city.
Which 2017 Subaru Impreza trim should I buy?
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.0i, Premium, Sport, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.0i: This is the most basic version, and it gives you the core Impreza formula at the lowest entry point. You get standard all-wheel drive, a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and can live without extra comfort features.
- Premium: This trim adds an automatic transmission and opens the door to more options, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers who want a more livable daily driver without jumping to the top trim. It is also the trim where EyeSight adds $1,395 and brings blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
- Sport: This is the trim to consider if you want a little more character, since it adds torque vectoring and offers an optional stick shift. It is the right pick if you want the most engaging version of the standard lineup without moving into a luxury-oriented setup.
- Limited: This is the most upscale version, and it can be ordered with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment. Choose it if you want the most comfort and convenience features in the lineup.
EyeSight is available on the Premium trim and adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 827 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.37% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,994, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Impreza's resale value?
The current average of $12,513 sits slightly below last year's $12,949.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, which can make it harder for a future seller to command a premium unless the car is especially clean and well equipped. Even so, the Impreza’s practical appeal and standard all-wheel drive help keep it relevant to shoppers who want an affordable, capable compact car.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza safe?
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is a Top Safety Pick Plus from IIHS and earns a five-star safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes lane-departure alerts, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. On the Premium trim, it also adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
One caveat is that the adaptive cruise behavior has an odd flaw: if the car stays stopped for more than 3 seconds, the system turns off and the car can begin to roll forward, so you need to stay attentive in traffic.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for standard all-wheel drive, affordable tech, and a practical sedan-or-hatchback format that is uncommon in this segment.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of affordability, standard all-wheel drive, and everyday usefulness, the 2017 is the one to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can still shop aggressively and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained examples, since condition matters a lot in this market.
