Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Subaru Impreza earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, which points to a strong overall showing for shoppers who want a practical compact car. It is described as affordable, safe, and practical, with standard all-wheel drive in a sedan or hatchback body style, making it a useful alternative if you want car-like packaging instead of a crossover.

The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

It is also framed as a sensible choice for both longtime Subaru fans and first-time owners, though it is not presented as especially refined.

30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Impreza is presented as a practical, everyday car with standard all-wheel drive, good fuel economy, and a design aimed at useful transportation rather than flash. The expert notes also emphasize that the updated model is affordable and safe, which supports the idea that it is built around dependable day-to-day ownership.

Its 2-liter boxer engine and CVT are described as a straightforward setup for commuting, and the transmission is specifically noted as having improved behavior when shifting between Reverse and Drive. If you want a used compact that should be manageable to live with, the main long-term risk is more about finding a well-kept example than worrying about a complicated ownership experience.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?

At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows signs of heavy use. Focus on body condition, interior wear, and how the car drives, since the model is described as practical but not especially refined.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: In 2.0i trim, the car starts with a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control, while Premium adds an automatic transmission and more options. Sport adds minor performance-oriented touches, and Limited can be ordered with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment.
• Powertrain: The only engine choice is Subaru’s 2-liter, 152-hp, 4-cylinder boxer engine, paired with a continuously variable transmission. The setup is tuned for commuting, gets as much as 38 mpg highway and 28 city, and does not include a turbo engine.
• Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite. It can alert drivers who stray from their lanes, automatically hit the brakes in an emergency, and adjust cruise control automatically to follow the car in front. On the Premium trim, it adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
• Infotainment: Every 2017 Impreza comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the touchscreen gives you access to music, podcasts, and navigation. The top trim can be ordered with upgraded infotainment.
• Fuel efficiency: The car gets 38 mpg highway and 28 city.

Which 2017 Subaru Impreza trim should I buy?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.0i, Premium, Sport, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.0i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basics: a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and are comfortable with a sparse cabin.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds an automatic transmission and opens the door to more options. It also pairs with EyeSight, which adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights on this trim.
• Sport: Choose this if you want the minor performance-oriented touches and the added torque vectoring that helps improve cornering. It is the trim to consider if you want a little more driving character without moving to the top end.
• Limited: This is the trim for you if you want the most comfort and convenience features, including leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment.

EyeSight is available on the Premium trim and adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights there.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 895 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.08% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 58.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,998, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Subaru Impreza's resale value?

The current average of $12,761 sits slightly above last year's $12,624.

That modest increase suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year. If you buy one and keep it in good condition, you should have a decent chance of preserving value better than a car with weaker demand.

The price trend also points to steady buyer interest rather than a sharp drop in desirability. For a future seller, that usually means you can expect a more stable exit price if the car remains clean and well maintained.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza safe?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is a Top Safety Pick Plus from IIHS and earns a five-star safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two color cameras mounted on the windshield. It can alert drivers who stray from their lanes, automatically hit the brakes in an emergency, and adjust cruise control automatically to follow the car in front. On the Premium trim, it adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.

One caveat is that the automatic cruise control behavior is described as unusual: if the car remains stopped for more than 3 seconds, it turns off and the car starts to roll forward, so you need to stay attentive in traffic.

Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.08% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It is highlighted as an all-new model year that brings standard all-wheel drive, affordable tech, and practical packaging in a sedan or hatchback body style.

The bottom line: The 2017 is the right pick if you want standard all-wheel drive, strong safety, and a practical compact car with modern tech. If you are more price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully for a lower-mileage, accident-free example, but the 2017 makes the most sense when you want the updated design and the broadest mix of usefulness and value.
