Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?

The driving impression is similarly reassuring: it feels composed, secure, and controlled, with solid steering and minimal road and wind noise. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example that still matches the car’s original feature set and condition.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?

At 52.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. It also makes sense to focus on how the car feels on the road, since the MAZDA3’s appeal depends heavily on its steering, ride composure, and overall condition. If you’re comparing listings, pay close attention to equipment differences, because trim content changes the ownership experience a lot.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Sport is well equipped with daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and the Mazda Connect infotainment system. Touring adds 18-inch wheels, automatic on/off headlights, heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leather-wrapped controls, leatherette sport seats, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Grand Touring adds the more powerful 2.5-liter engine, LED fog lights, a rear spoiler, a moonroof, Bose audio, SiriusXM, and a full-color active driving display.
• Powertrain: The car uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 hp in the base setup, while the Grand Touring gets a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp. Both engines can be paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, and the stronger engine trades some efficiency for more punch.
• Safety package: Touring and Grand Touring trims include advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support. Base models do not get that added safety suite.
• Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch touchscreen, Mazda Connect, Bluetooth, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SiriusXM, and two USB ports. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 highway with the manual, or 28/37 with the automatic. The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic, and the i-ELOOP package can improve the automatic to 28/37.

Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want a well-equipped car with core comfort, connectivity, and stability features.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds meaningful comfort and safety upgrades, including heated seats, dual-zone climate control, and blind-spot monitoring.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the strongest engine, the most upscale cabin features, and the richest tech and audio setup.

Touring and Grand Touring are the trims that add the advanced safety package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward comparison shopping.

• Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 748 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 4.54% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 52.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,916, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $13,243 sits slightly above last year's $12,668.

That upward move suggests the car has held demand reasonably well, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A model year with rising prices usually gives you a better chance of preserving value, especially when inventory is still active and buyers are comparing condition closely.

Because the market is still showing solid deal activity, your eventual resale outcome will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and equipment. Well-kept examples with desirable trims should remain easier to move than rougher cars with accident history.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2017 Mazda3 has not been fully rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It has so far received a top mark of five stars in side crash testing and four stars in rollover testing.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring trims add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda's version of automatic emergency braking.

A key caveat is that the car had not yet been fully tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the text provided, so you should pay close attention to trim-level safety equipment when comparing used listings.

Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 4.54% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Mazda added its first real update since this generation debuted, including design changes and new G-Vectoring Control.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,298, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,243 average.
• It emphasizes engaging driving without turning harsh or tiring.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of updated design, strong owner satisfaction, and broad market availability, the 2017 is the better default choice. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up some of the 2017 update, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path.
