Is the 2017 Dodge Charger reliable?

Owners rate it 4.72/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its smooth ride and strong overall driving experience. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Charger delivers a satisfying, confidence-inspiring drive, even if it is built around performance rather than simplicity.

The ownership tradeoff is that this kind of performance-focused sedan can bring higher running costs and more wear-related expense over time, so used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and condition.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Charger?

At 46.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car has been maintained consistently, especially if it has been driven hard.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Daytona treatment adds SRT-derived design details, a cold-air induction system with a functional hood scoop, heritage-inspired graphics, a Satin Black roof and rear spoiler treatment, wider 20-inch aluminum wheels, and interior upgrades. It also adds performance enhancements over the R/T and R/T Scat Pack versions.
• Powertrain: The Daytona 392 uses a 6.4-liter V8 with 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, paired with a paddle-shifted 8-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive, and an electronic limited-slip differential. It is tuned for serious acceleration and track-ready performance.
• Safety package: The Driver Confidence Group includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and HID headlights. Standard equipment also includes a reversing camera, while optional safety features include adaptive cruise control with full-stop capability, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The Charger gets an 8.4-inch Uconnect system with upgraded graphics, quick response, pinch-and-swipe controls, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a free 6-month Uconnect Access trial. That trial adds voice texting, remote start, remote locking, and a vehicle finder.
• Fuel efficiency: The Daytona 392 is EPA-rated at 15 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined. The review also notes an average of 17.4 mpg in testing.

Which 2017 Dodge Charger trim should I buy?

The 2017 Dodge Charger is offered in 2 trim levels: R/T and R/T Scat Pack.

Here's the short version:

• R/T: This is the lower-priced Daytona-based setup and the better starting point if you want the Charger’s look and V8 character without stepping up to the more powerful version. It gives you the core Daytona styling and performance flavor at the lower entry price.
• R/T Scat Pack: This is the best-value choice if you want the full Daytona 392 experience. It adds the 6.4-liter V8, stronger performance hardware, and the more serious track-ready personality that defines this model.

The safety content also notes that the Charger’s federal crash results do not apply to SRT models.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Charger?

Act selectively, because this is still a seller’s market and the best listings can move quickly.

• Deal availability: 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,142 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 3.25% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 46.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,160, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Dodge Charger’s resale value?

The current average of $18,336 sits slightly above last year's $17,759.

That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. Strong demand can help support resale value, especially when the car has the kind of standout personality and performance appeal that keeps shoppers interested.

The relatively tight year-round range also suggests that well-priced examples can hold attention, while overpriced listings may sit longer. If you keep mileage, condition, and maintenance records in good shape, you should be in a better position when it is time to trade or sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.72/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Dodge Charger safe?

The Charger earns high marks for crashworthiness and collision avoidance from IIHS, though it also receives a Marginal rating in the small offset frontal-impact test. In NHTSA assessments, it earns four- and five-star ratings across the board.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

A reversing camera is standard, and Uconnect Access adds 911 Call for emergency assistance for 6 months before a subscription is required. Optional driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with full-stop capability, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The Marginal small-offset result is the main caveat to keep in mind if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Charger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 46.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 3.25% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.72/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a next-generation Uconnect system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and stronger tech than the prior year.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $15,625, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $18,336 average.
• It offers a more broadly useful, satisfying sedan with strong value.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $18,841, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $18,336 average.
• It adds modern tech, available all-wheel drive, and a wider performance range.

The bottom line: If you want the Charger’s bold personality with updated infotainment and strong performance, the 2017 is the right middle ground. If price matters most, the 2016 is the value play; if you want more modern breadth and available all-wheel drive, the 2018 is worth the extra money.
